How to stop vomiting and loose motion? - #12046

Ranveer

I am feeling really overwhelmed here. For the past three days, I've been struggling with this relentless combination of vomiting and loose motion. It started right after I had dinner at this new place, and at first, I thought it was just a stomach bug. But no, the vomiting and loose motion just keep coming and going, and I haven't been able to keep any food or even water down for a while!! I’m super tired and scared because the last time I had this, it lasted for a week and the vomiting and loose motion made me feel so weak I could hardly get out of bed. I tried ginger tea and bananas, I’ve been drinking pomegranate juice because someone said it helps, but nothing seems to work. Is there a more effective way on how to stop vomiting and loose motion, or any specific medications you guys recommend? I keep wondering, what if this is more serious? I don’t know if I should be eating bland food or just stick with fluids. How can I stop this cycle? Any tips on how to stop vomiting and loose motion would be great, I really don't want to end up in the hospital! Thanks a lot, guys. I'm just feeling really lost right now and could use some advice.

Doctors’ responses

When dealing with ongoing vomiting and loose motion, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and to restore the balance of electrolytes, which are vital for body function, especially if you’ve been unable to maintain fluid intake. Start with sipping on clear fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), or broth, which can help prevent dehydration. Avoid caffeinated or sugary beverages as they might exacerbate symptoms. If you’re struggling with oral hydration, it’s important to contact a healthcare provider since intravenous fluids may be necessary, especially if symptoms persist. Over-the-counter antiemetics like ondansetron might help reduce nausea and vomiting; however, consult a doctor before use to ensure it’s appropriate for you. For diarrhea, loperamide can sometimes help, but only if there’s no sign of a bacterial infection, such as high fever or bloody stools. Persistent symptoms for more than 48 hours, inability to hydrate, or severe weakness are indications that professional medical review is necessary to rule out more serious causes like an infection or other gastrointestinal issues. Regarding diet, start with a bland diet once vomiting reduces; things like plain rice, toast, or applesauce might help settle the stomach. Always ensure thorough hand washing and food preparation hygiene to avoid potential infections, and remember that ongoing symptoms like these can sometimes indicate something more than just a mild infection. Therefore, timely medical evaluation is key if there’s no improvement or if symptoms worsen.
