Best medicine for loose motion - #12103

Ira

I am dealing with this annoying problem of loose motion for the past few days. At first, it seemed like just a random thing after having some street food, ya know? But then I started having frequent trips to the bathroom, and it got really frustrating. I thought it would go away on its own, but nope! It actually got worse. I even tried drinking more water and eating bland stuff like bananas and rice, thinking that would help. Ugh, the constant feeling of urgency is such a downer! I even missed a couple of important events. It’s like loose motion has taken over my life. Tried some over-the-counter meds but they didn't really make a difference. I was thinking could someone suggest the best medicine for loose motion out there? I’ve heard some folks talk about probiotics and things like that too. Do those actually help? Should I be worried that this is still dragging on? Also, is there any dietary thing I should be doing or avoiding like the plague? It feels like I’m losing patience and want my normal routine back. A lil' help would really be appreciated!

Doctors’ responses

For ongoing loose motions like you describe, addressing the root cause is vital. Since it seems to have started after eating street food, it might be an infection, like bacterial or viral gastroenteritis. First, it’s good you’ve been staying hydrated—fluids with electrolytes can be more effective than plain water, so consider drinks like ORS (oral rehydration solutions) or sports drinks. If dehydration signs arise, seek medical attention—watch for symptoms such as extreme thirst, dry mouth, little or no urination, and dizziness.

As for medications, you might consider an over-the-counter anti-diarrheal like loperamide, which can help with reducing the frequency of motions. Use these cautiously and not for extended periods without advice from a healthcare professional, as they can conceal underlying issues. Probiotics increasingly show benefits in restoring gut balance but may not offer immediate relief.

Diet-wise, continuing with bland foods is wise. Stick to easy-to-digest options like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast—often known as the BRAT diet. Also, avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and greasy or spicy foods, which can irritate your digestive system at this time. Keep an eye on red-flag symptoms like blood in stools, fever, or severe abdominal pain. If these occur, or if symptoms persist beyond a few days, seeking medical evaluation is important to rule out conditions like a more serious infection, food intolerance, or even inflammatory bowel disease.

Since you’ve already tried some over-the-counter options with little success, it might be time to consult your doctor. They’ll be able to evaluate for any specific pathogens or underlying conditions that need targeted treatment, and guide you on the appropriate medication and dietary adjustments based on a thorough assessment.
