what can we eat during loose motion - #12272

Shivam

I am really struggling here... Last week, I had this sudden bout of loose motion that just knocked me off my feet! I was fine one moment, but then I couldn't stop rushing to the bathroom. It's been super uncomfortable and honestly a bit scary, especially since I also had some mild cramping. I've been drinking plenty of water but I keep wondering, what can we eat during loose motion that won’t upset my stomach even more? My doctor suggested plain rice and bananas, but is there more to it? I mean, is toast okay, too? I tried some applesauce, but I felt like it might’ve made things worse... I get really nervous about food choices right now! My friends mentioned things like boiled potatoes or even oatmeal, but I just don't know what can we eat during loose motion without making everything worse. I just want to feel better! Like, am I still supposed to worry about fiber or fats? There’s just so much conflicting info out there! I need some real advice from all of you who might have had this issue. Please help me figure out what can we eat during loose motion to get back on track!

Doctors’ responses

During a bout of loose motion, what you eat can indeed make a significant difference in how your stomach feels. Your doctor’s suggestion of plain rice and bananas is quite standard since they’re part of the popular BRAT diet — bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast — that is often recommended. These are low in fiber and bland, which tends to be gentler on the digestive system. But it’s not the only option. Toast, particularly if it’s plain or lightly buttered, can be okay, but you’ll want to avoid heavy, greasy toppings. Boiled potatoes are also generally safe as they are starchy and gentle on your belly. If you’re trying oatmeal, make sure it’s plain and not the instant kind with additives, and cook it well to make it digestible. Keep the fiber low initially, while your gut is still irritated, as high-fiber foods can sometimes exacerbate symptoms.

As you reintroduce more foods, focus on lean proteins like boiled chicken or turkey, and consider including yogurt with live cultures — it might help restore some of the normal bacteria in your gut. Staying hydrated is crucial, so continue with water, but you might also benefit from an oral rehydration solution to replace lost electrolytes. Avoid fatty, spicy, or very sugary foods, as well as dairy products other than yogurt, until you feel better, as they can worsen diarrhea in some people. If symptoms persist for more than a few days, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration despite drinking fluids, it’s important to seek further medical advice to rule out more serious conditions.
