How to maintain liver function? - #12309

Sia

I am really worried about my health lately, especially my liver function. Just last month, I had some wacky blood test results and they showed elevated liver enzymes. The doctor mentioned something about how to maintain liver function but I felt overwhelmed and didn't grasp all the details. Since then, I’ve been eating a lot of greens and cutting back on alcohol, but I'm not sure if that's enough! Sometimes I feel this weird pressure in my upper right abdomen and I keep wondering if it’s related to liver function or something else. Like, how to maintain liver function? I read online that being hydrated is key and that certain foods can really help. But I also heard that some herbal supplements might do more harm than good! If I try to take those, will they actually help? Are there any foods, habits, or even lifestyle changes people swear by that really helped them with liver function? I’m slightly freaking out and wondering if it's too late for me to get it back on track. Any ideas or advice about how to maintain liver function in a realistic way? I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right.

Liver health is an important and sometimes complex issue to tackle, but taking the right steps can make a substantial difference. It seems you’ve already taken some positive actions by eating more greens and reducing alcohol consumption—these are great first steps. The liver is a resilient organ, and it can often recover quite well if harmful influences are minimized. Continue to limit or eliminate alcohol consumption entirely; even moderate drinking can exacerbate liver issues when liver enzymes are elevated. Focus also on maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. Besides leafy greens, consider incorporating foods rich in antioxidants and healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and whole grains. Avoid foods that are high in saturated fats, trans fats, and sugars, as they can contribute to added stress on the liver. When it comes to hydration, drinking plenty of water can aid your liver in flushing out toxins. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day, which can vary based on your level of activity and exposure to heat.

About herbal supplements, you’re right to be cautious. Some can actually be damaging to the liver, particularly those that aren’t well regulated for safety and efficacy. Milk thistle is one supplement that’s often mentioned for liver support, but it’s best to only consider supplements under the guidance of a healthcare provider who understands your full health context. The sensation of pressure in the upper right abdomen should be further evaluated by your healthcare provider, especially if it persists or worsens. It could be related to the liver or could point to another issue such as the gallbladder or other gastrointestinal concerns. Regular physical activity is also beneficial; it can both support your liver function and help maintain a healthy weight. If lifestyle changes alone don’t normalize your liver enzyme levels, your doctor might need to explore other underlying causes like viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or medication effects. Keep a good line of communication with your healthcare provider. Monitoring your liver function through periodic blood tests and addressing any new or worsening symptoms promptly is essential. It’s usually not too late to see improvement with the right steps, but if you notice any severe symptoms like jaundice (yellowing of the skin), significant pain, or unexplained fatigue, see a doctor immediately.
