Which foods are bad for liver? - #12349

Harsh

I am really concerned about my liver health lately. A few weeks ago, I had some tests done because of ongoing fatigue and odd pains on my right side. The doctor mentioned that my liver enzymes are slightly elevated, which totally freaked me out! Now I keep wondering, which foods are bad for liver? I've read a bunch of stuff online, and it all seems super confusing. Like, I had a big steak last weekend, and now I feel guilty. Is red meat one of those foods that are bad for liver? Also, I used to drink sodas like every day, and I heard that sugar is not great either but I wasn't sure if that meant all sugar or just added stuff. I tried cutting back on alcohol, but boy, it’s hard! I mean, is occasional wine really that harmful? And what about fried foods, cause I love French fries, but are they bad? I just want to figure out what’s good and what’s not! I keep asking around, but getting mixed answers! Can anyone help clear up which foods are bad for liver, or should I be focusing on specific things to eat instead? I really want to feel better and not make it worse. Any advice would be super appreciated!!!

Doctors’ responses

Certain foods and drinks can indeed impact liver health, and understanding which ones to limit or avoid can be really helpful in managing your condition. High consumption of alcohol is, as you may expect, one of the primary contributors to liver damage. Regular intake can lead to liver inflammation and eventually to conditions like fatty liver, hepatitis, or even cirrhosis. So, cutting back on alcohol, including wine, is essential — aim for moderation if you find it challenging to quit entirely. While red meat isn’t categorically bad, it should be consumed in moderation. High-fat meats can contribute to fatty liver disease since your liver processes fat, and excesses can strain it. Try to balance it with leaner sources of protein like poultry, fish, or plant-based proteins. Sugars and sodas are worth paying attention to as well. High fructose intake, commonly found in sweetened beverages and processed foods, can harm the liver by contributing to fat buildup. Focus on reducing added sugars rather than naturally occurring ones found in fruits. Fried and overly processed fast foods should also be limited. They often contain unhealthy fats and sugars, which can exacerbate liver problems. Instead, look for whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and foods high in fiber to support liver function and general health. You’re right to be cautious and proactive, and maintaining balance in your diet alongside regular medical follow-up is important. It might be beneficial to work with a nutritionist or dietitian who can provide personalized guidance based on your specific health needs and lifestyle to strengthen your approach further.
