Why heart rate increases suddenly? - #12433

Shreya

I am super confused and a bit freaked out about this sudden thing with my heart rate. Like, just last week, I was sitting on my couch watching TV and, outta nowhere, my heart started racing like crazy. I mean, I wasn't doing anything at all... just chilling! This happened a couple of times, and I really can't figure out why my heart rate increases suddenly like that. It's happened when I'm relaxed, and then also when I was just walking up the stairs. My friend said it might be anxiety or something, but I'm not sure because I felt fine, you know? I went to my doctor, who did some tests, and everything seemed normal. But when I looked it up online, there are too many reasons for why heart rate increases suddenly and it's kinda overwhelming! It feels like I’m constantly worrying about it now. Some info suggested things like dehydration or stress, but I drink enough water and I wouldn’t say I’m super stressed. I’m left wondering if certain foods or caffeine play a role too? Any thoughts or advice on why heart rate increases suddenly in such random moments? Should I be worried and what other tests should I consider? Thanks for any help!

Doctors' responses

Sudden increases in heart rate when you’re not exerting yourself can have several possible explanations. First off, it’s good to know you’ve already seen a doctor and undergone some tests, which is essential in ruling out serious heart conditions. However, the fact that you still notice these episodes can be frustrating. Several factors might cause your heart to race unexpectedly, even at rest. The body’s response to anxiety can sometimes catch you off guard, even if you don’t consciously feel anxious. It can also be due to dehydration, thyroid disorders, caffeine, alcohol, or certain medications, including over-the-counter ones with stimulants. Try keeping an eye on your caffeine or alcohol intake, as these can increase your heart rate, and see if there’s any correlation between your intake and the episodes. Also, monitor your hydration status. It’s sensible to continue to follow up with your doctor and consider additional tests if these episodes persist. They might investigate further with an event monitor or Holter monitor to capture any unusual rhythms over time. Sometimes, thyroid function tests can reveal if an overactive thyroid might be contributing to the symptoms. If you’re worried about the episodes being very frequent or paired with other symptoms like dizziness, fainting, or chest pain, seek medical attention promptly. Remember, staying observant and informed while working with your healthcare provider is vital to ensure peace of mind.
