liver function improvement - #12817

Kiaan

I am really worried about my liver function improvement because over the last few months I've been feeling super fatigued and having these weird pains on my right side, you know, like just under the rib cage? I went to the doc and they did some blood tests. My ALT and AST levels were kinda high (not extreme, but elevated) and my doctor mentioned something about how I could look into liver function improvement. I've cut out alcohol completely and trying to stick to a healthy diet, but sometimes I feel like I'm not sure if I’m doing enough to really boost the liver function improvement thing. I read that certain foods, like beets and leafy greens, are good for it, but like, is there anything specific I should focus on? Also, I've been considering supplements, but I don’t want to mess things up more. I’m a bit frustrated 'cause I'm doing my best, but I just want to see actual liver function improvement results. Has anyone been through something similar or have any advice on things that really worked for them? Should I be doing more tests or just wait it out? I guess I’m just looking for some guidance on how to actually measure the liver function improvement. Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

Elevated ALT and AST levels can indicate liver stress, so it’s great that you’ve already cut out alcohol and started a healthy diet. There are several steps you can take to support liver function improvement. Focus your diet on whole foods, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Foods with high antioxidant content like berries, beets, and leafy greens do help, as they can reduce oxidative stress on the liver. Make sure to include sufficient fiber, as this aids in reducing liver fat accumulation. Limiting processed foods and refined sugars is critical, too, as they can lead to detrimental fat buildup in the liver. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is crucial for optimal liver function. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity can further promote liver health, as even modest weight loss can lead to improved liver enzyme levels. In regards to supplements, be wary and discuss with your healthcare provider before taking any since certain supplements might not be suitable or necessary. Milk thistle is one commonly recommended supplement because it contains silymarin, which may have liver-protective effects, though evidence is mixed and not all experts agree on its use. The same is true for other popular options like turmeric, so always consult your doctor. Monitoring your liver function through regular follow-up blood tests as advised by your doctor is important to assess whether your efforts are effective. If further tests are indicated based on clinical judgment, like ultrasound for structural liver changes or specialized blood tests, your healthcare provider will guide you on that. Laboratory follow-up can typically be done after 3-6 months of lifestyle changes unless symptoms worsen. Pay attention to any new or worsening symptoms like increased fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, which warrant immediate medical consultation. Keep engaging with your healthcare provider on your progress and any concerns, to get personalized guidance tailored to your ongoing condition.
