keep liver healthy

Krishna

I am really worried about my liver health right now. Over the past few months, I’ve been feeling drained and sometimes my abdomen feels a bit swollen, especially after I eat. I mean, I'm only in my thirties, and I thought I was keeping my liver healthy by eating fruits and veggies mostly, but I've also been stressed out a lot lately. I've done some blood tests too, and the doc mentioned that my liver enzymes were a bit elevated, which freaked me out. They didn't tell me much more than that, just that I need to "keep liver healthy" and maybe change a few things in my diet, but like, what exactly does that mean? I mean, does it really help to drink more water? I've been trying to cut down on alcohol, but I don't even drink that much anyway! I also read somewhere about supplements to keep liver healthy. Is that a good idea? Or could that do more harm than good? I honestly feel like I'm not doing enough to keep my liver healthy and it makes me anxious. What are some practical things I can do every day? I keep thinking about how I wanna avoid serious problems in the future but the information is just super overwhelming. If anyone has been in a similar boat, what worked for you?

Doctors' responses

First thing to note when focusing on liver health is to keep things balanced—gathering basics through lifestyle adjustments is beneficial. Since your liver enzymes are elevated, moderation in what you consume becomes key. Although you’re already eating fruits and vegetables, ensure you’re getting a varied array of them, focusing on liver-friendly foods like leafy greens, carrots, beets, and citrus fruits, which support detox processes. Alcohol definitely impacts liver function, so even reducing intake from low levels can contribute to improvement. Drinking sufficient water should be part of maintaining general health, but specifically for the liver, staying hydrated supports cellular processes without directly cleansing it. Stress management might be just as crucial; practices like mindfulness or structured exercise can lower body’s overall inflammatory responses, indirectly supporting liver health. Over-the-counter liver supplements can be risky without medical guidance—many aren’t well-studied or regulated, and they might interact unfavorably with other meds or supplements you’re taking. Instead, aim at natural options through diet, hydration, and physical activity. Regular monitoring of your lab work with your physician gives you a clearer progression of your liver’s response to these changes. If symptoms persist or worsen—like unmanageable fatigue or worsening abdominal swelling—it would necessitate more comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider. Potential underlying reasons for elevated liver enzymes could vary broadly, and going for specific medical advice is a responsible approach. Cutting out processed foods and refined sugars can also be beneficial in preventing liver overload. They can lead to fat accumulation which in turn burdens the liver. Small practical steps consistently applied can relieve anxiety and contribute to your long-term health goals, ensuring the liver remains healthy and functional.
