pimple holes - #13098

Dhruv

I am freaking out about these pimple holes on my face. Like, I've always had acne, but now after my last breakout, I can’t believe how many holes seem to be left behind. It all started a few months ago when I had this really bad breakout during exam week. I thought it was just stress. Anyway, I picked at them (bad, I know!!) and now I’m left with these pimple holes that are super noticeable, especially in the sunlight. I’ve tried a bunch of over-the-counter creams and even some vitamin C serums hoping to fill them in or at least make them less dark, but nothing is working! I feel like I read somewhere that these pimple holes could be permanent scars, and that makes me really anxious. Has anyone else dealt with pimple holes like this? Like, is there any way to actually get rid of them? I mean, do I need to go for some professional treatment or is there something at home I can try that’s not too harsh? My friend mentioned microneedling, but I don't know if that's a good idea. I’m just really tired of feeling self-conscious about this. If anyone has any advice or tips on how to deal with pimple holes, or if there are any treatments that worked for you, I'd love to hear!

Doctors’ responses

Pimple holes, or atrophic scars, can indeed be distressing but there are ways to address them. It’s worth noting that picking at acne can contribute to scarring, which might explain the holes you’re seeing. While topical treatments like over-the-counter creams and serums often help with discoloration, they’re less effective at filling in deeper scars. When it comes to home treatments for pitted acne scars, gentle exfoliation and keeping your skin well-moisturized can help in the long term, but they usually don’t dramatically reduce the appearance of scars. Professional treatments might be your best bet for significant improvement. Options like microneedling, which involves using small needles to puncture the skin and stimulate collagen production, can be effective but should ideally be done in a clinical setting by a trained professional to avoid the risk of infection or additional damage. Other treatments include chemical peels, laser therapy, or dermal fillers, depending on the scar type and severity. A dermatologist can evaluate your skin and suggest the right approach tailored to your needs. It’s essential to have realistic expectations; improvement takes time and sometimes requires a combination of therapies. While stress might trigger breakouts, maintaining a good skincare regimen helps in preventing further acne. If anxiety around your skin persists, consulting a specialist can help ease concerns and guide you on the path to skin recovery.
