dark pimples on face - #13126

Nikhil

I am super concerned about these dark pimples on my face that just suddenly appeared outta nowhere last week. Like, one day I was chillin' with clear skin and then boom! I woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw these weird dark pimples on my cheeks and forehead. They’re not really like the typical acne I've had before, more like spots that look almost blackish and are kinda sore to touch. At first, I thought maybe it was just a normal breakout, but I’ve tried all my usual stuff—cleansers, creams, you name it—and nothing seems to work! Even my friends asked what happened to my skin, which made me super self-conscious. I've been drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, and keeping my face clean, but the dark pimples are sticking around like unwanted guests! Also, should I see a dermatologist? Or do you think this is something I can handle at home? Ughh, I don’t wanna walk around looking like this and I'm really not sure why they popped up, any thoughts or experiences with dark pimples on face would be super helpful! I'm feeling kinda hopeless here.

Doctors’ responses

Dark pimples on the face, especially if they appear suddenly and have a dark or blackish coloration, could stem from a couple of different causes. Given they’re sore to touch, this might be more than a typical acne breakout. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is one possibility; this occurs when acne or any inflammation leaves behind dark marks on the skin as it heals. Hormonal changes can also lead to unexpected breakouts, and stress can exacerbate skin issues as well. Another angle to consider is that it could be a sign of more intense acne, such as nodular acne, or even an infection like a comedonal infection or impetigo if they’re sore and not responding to typical treatments. Before diving deeper into at-home treatments, it might be wise to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and suggest specific treatments based on the precise cause. However, in the meantime, gentle skincare routines are the foundation. Stick to non-comedogenic products and avoid overly harsh scrubs or creams that might aggravate your skin further. You might want to inspect your skincare and cosmetic products to see if any contains pore-clogging ingredients. Additionally, keep stress levels managed and maintain your hydration and a balanced diet as you’ve been doing. When it comes to topical treatments, ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are known to combat common pimples, but for dark spots, you may need something that targets pigmentation, such as vitamin C or niacinamide. Should your symptoms persist, worsen, or show signs of infection (like discharge or increased pain), seek a doctor’s advice promptly to prevent complications.
