how to control vomiting and loose motion - #13133

Sia

I am really worried about my health lately. For the past week, I’ve been dealing with this awful combo of vomiting and loose motion! Like, it’s been non-stop, and honestly, I can’t remember the last time I felt this sick. I thought it was just something I ate, but now I wonder if there’s some other issue going on. I went to see my doctor and they just said to drink plenty of fluids, but I don’t know how to control vomiting and loose motion effectively. I’ve tried ginger tea, which helps a bit, but I still can’t keep anything down. Plus, I’m feeling so weak from losing all those fluids! I’ve been skipping work and just staying home, which is super frustrating! Is there any specific diet or remedy that could really help manage this? I’ve heard about some over-the-counter meds, but I’m nervous about what to take. I just want to understand how to control vomiting and loose motion better before it gets worse. Anyone experienced something similar? What really worked for you? I’m open to any suggestions, please help!

Doctors’ responses

Managing vomiting and loose motion effectively requires staying hydrated and addressing potential underlying causes, such as infections, dietary triggers, or even stress. Drink small sips of clear fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions, or broths to help replenish lost electrolytes and prevent dehydration. Ginger tea can be soothing but it’s crucial to continue with fluid intake to mitigate fluid loss. For a BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast), these bland foods can gently aid digestion while avoiding aggravating your stomach. Limit oily, spicy, or fatty foods as they may worsen symptoms. Over-the-counter antiemetics (like dimenhydrinate) can reduce nausea, but consult a pharmacist or doctor before use to ensure it’s suitable for you. Loperamide might help control diarrhea if you’re not experiencing any severe symptoms like fever or blood in stools. However, any signs like persistent vomiting, high fever, severe weakness, or bloody diarrhea would needs immediate medical attention to rule out serious conditions such as infections or inflammatory bowel disease. Stress reduction techniques such as meditation can sometimes aid in symptom management if triggered by anxiety. Avoid any medications that slow digestion if infection is suspected, as they may prolong the illness. Always address hydration and nutrition first while closely monitoring symptoms for any red flags needing urgent care. If your condition hasn’t improved over several days, it’s vital to see a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
