fatty liver symptom - #13198

Atharv

I am really confused and a bit worried about this sudden fatigue I’ve been feeling. A few months ago, I had some blood tests done, and my doctor mentioned a fatty liver symptom that was showing up, but honestly, I didn’t think much of it at the time. Lately though, I’ve been struggling with this achy feeling in my abdomen and it’s like this constant heaviness there. Sometimes I even feel a bit nauseous after I eat, which is just not normal for me!! I read some stuff online, and I saw that a fatty liver symptom can also include some changes in mood or brain fog, and I’ve definitely noticed that too! Maybe I’m just overthinking it, but do these symptoms mean my fatty liver is worsening? I’ve tried to eat better - way less fried food and soda, but the fatigue just keeps dragging me down. Should I be worried about this fatty liver symptom and how it could be affecting my health in the long run? Like, what should I even be asking my doctor when I go for my next check-up? What if it gets worse? I don’t want to ignore it, but I feel like I’m in a loop of confusion. Any advice or similar experiences??

Doctors’ responses

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, can indeed cause the symptoms you’re experiencing, like fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and nausea after meals. When fat builds up in the liver, it can lead to inflammation which might cause these feelings of heaviness and achiness. If you’re noticing cognitive changes like brain fog or mood alterations, these could be connected too, as liver function is essential for detoxifying the body and maintaining energy levels. Your steps to improve diet are good – reducing saturated fats, fried foods and sugary drinks are important. However, fully managing fatty liver may require more comprehensive lifestyle adjustments, depending on your overall health status, weight, and any other conditions. It’s valuable to discuss these symptoms with your doctor, focusing on whether there’s been progression to more serious conditions like steatohepatitis, which involves inflammation and might lead to scarring or cirrhosis over time. When meeting your healthcare provider, ask about further testing such as a liver function test or ultrasound to evaluate the extent of fatty liver. Enquiring about a personalized diet and exercise plan could also help manage your condition long-term. You might want to ask about the potential need for any medications if lifestyle changes aren’t enough. Regular follow-ups are crucial to monitor changes and adjust treatment accordingly. If symptoms like vomiting blood, jaundice, or significant weight loss occur, seek immediate medical attention, as these red-flag symptoms can indicate more severe liver damage. Addressing these concerns proactively and under professional guidance can help manage the condition effectively, reducing the risk of progression and helping improve your quality of life.
