aloe vera overnight - #13318

Amara

I am really curious about using aloe vera overnight for my skin, but I've been having some doubts. A few weeks ago, I started noticing some dry patches and like, little blemishes popping up on my cheeks. It freaked me out! I tried a bunch of creams, but nothing worked. Then, someone told me that applying aloe vera overnight could help. Sooo, I bought a big bottle of aloe vera gel and began slathering it on my face every night. At first, it felt amazing, like a cool relief. But then I woke up one morning to find my skin super oily, and my spots seemed worse! I'm like, is aloe vera overnight actually doing anything? I’ve read conflicting things about how it helps with hydration and healing, but my skin is so sensitive! Should I be worried that it’s making it worse? Like, do I need to wash it off before bed? Can I apply like, way too much? I thought it was a natural solution but this is frustrating. I wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences with aloe vera overnight use? Is it better for oily or dry skin? Or should I stop using it all together? Help!

Doctors’ responses

Aloe vera is a popular remedy for many skin issues, but its effects can vary, especially if you have sensitive skin. Aloe vera is known for its soothing, hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with minor irritations or dry spots. However, not all skin types react positively to it, especially when it’s left on overnight, which might trigger oiliness or worsen breakouts in some cases, particularly if you have combination or oily skin. The reaction you described, waking up with oilier skin and more blemishes, suggests that the aloe vera may not be suitable for your skin type or that it’s not working well with your current skincare routine. In cases of sensitive skin, it’s often better to test a new product by applying it to a small patch of skin and gradually increasing use, rather than applying liberally at first. Using aloe vera overnight may be like too much of a good thing for your skin, especially if you also use other moisturizing or occlusive products that can trap excess oil or cause congestion. A thin layer can be sufficient if you’re considering using it overnight; otherwise, it might be worth washing it off before bed to avoid potential issues. Additionally, ensure you’re using pure aloe vera gel without additives that might irritate your skin. In contrast, if skin reactions persist, it might be wise to cease use and consult a dermatologist, as they can help determine if there’s an underlying condition contributing to your symptoms. Alternating usage or combining aloe vera with other compatible products might offer comfort without aggravating your skin condition.
