severe loose motion medicine - #13464
I am in a bit of a panic here. Last weekend I had this awful food, and now I can't seem to stop having severe loose motions. Like, it’s happened 10 times already today, and it’s just awful. I feel so weak and dehydrated. I tried drinking lots of water and some electrolyte solutions, but it doesn’t seem to help much, ya know? Went to a local pharmacy yesterday, and they gave me something for severe loose motion medicine, but honestly, it hasn't done anything yet. It’s driving me mad. I keep thinking, am I eating or drinking something that’s making it worse? I’m scared to eat! Has anyone here faced something similar? What severe loose motion medicine actually works? I'm worried that if this goes on, I might need a doctor, which I really don't want. How long does severe loose motion usually last anyway? Any tips on what I should take or do to ease this? Thank you!

Doctors’ responses
If you’re experiencing frequent and severe loose motions, it’s crucial to first address the risk of dehydration. Continue with oral rehydration solutions, not just plain water, as these will help replenish lost electrolytes. If you haven’t already, reduce intake of caffeinated or sugary drinks as they can exacerbate dehydration. For medication, over-the-counter options like loperamide can help reduce diarrhea frequency by slowing down gut transit time. However, it’s important to only use these temporarily, and not when fever or blood is present in stools, as that may signal a bacterial infection needing different treatment. Consider taking probiotics or consuming yoghurt to help restore your gut’s normal flora, which can often be disrupted during severe diarrhea episodes. Persistent symptoms beyond 48 hours or having high fever, severe abdominal pain, or signs of severe dehydration like dizziness or confusion, warrant an immediate visit to the doctor. Maintaining a bland diet can also help; stick with foods like bananas, rice, and toast and avoid dairy, greasy, and spicy foods that can irritate your digestive system further. Remember, if symptoms do not improve or if you’re concerned about your health, seeking medical evaluation is essential to rule out infections or other underlying conditions that may require more specific interventions like antibiotics. Stay attentive to warning signs and make sure hydration is your top priority while monitoring symptoms closely.
