type of heart disease - #13500

Divya

I am really worried about my dad. He’s 62 and recently he’s been getting really tired after walking just a short distance, like just to the mailbox. One time he even said he felt his chest tighten for a bit, which freaked me out. We took him to the doctor, and they mentioned it could be some type of heart disease but didn’t give us many details. I Googled type of heart disease, and honestly, now I'm more confused than ever. The doctor did some tests but said we’d have to wait for the results to understand exactly what we're dealing with. I keep thinking—what type of heart disease could it be? Could it be something really serious like coronary artery disease or something else? What type of heart disease does he need to prepare for? It’s hard to be patient while we’re waiting, and I keep asking myself what I can do to help him in the meantime. What kind of symptoms should we be looking out for? And if it is a type of heart disease, is there a chance he could still live a normal life? Any insights or advice from you all would be super helpful because this uncertainty is kinda driving me crazy.

Doctors' responses

Chest tightness and fatigue with minimal exertion, such as just walking to the mailbox, can indeed suggest several types of heart disease, with coronary artery disease (CAD) being a likely candidate. CAD occurs when the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup, leading to reduced blood flow, which can cause symptoms like your dad’s. This situation should be taken seriously, especially since these symptoms might indicate angina—a condition that occurs when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood. Aside from CAD, there are other heart conditions worth considering, like heart valve disease, heart failure, or cardiomyopathy, each having its own set of causes and treatments. Symptoms to watch out for include increased frequency or severity of chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, or swelling in extremities. Should any severe symptoms appear, like intense chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or fainting, it’s crucial to seek emergency medical attention, as these can signal a heart attack or other acute issue. While this wait for diagnosis might be stressful, ensuring your father avoids strenuous activities, adopts a heart-healthy diet, and adheres to any interim advice from his doctor can help. It’s also essential to manage any risk factors he might have, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, or high cholesterol. Many individuals with heart disease live normal lives through effective management and treatment, which can include lifestyle adjustments, medication, and sometimes procedures like stenting or surgery, so there is hope for a good quality of life post-diagnosis.
