pimples acne dark spot remove - #13822

Riya

I am really freaking out about my skin right now! I’ve been dealing with these horrible pimples that just won’t go away, and they leave these dark spots after. Like, I never had bad acne before, but suddenly, we’re talking about full-on breakouts! My face is like a battleground, and I just want to find a way to remove the dark spots that these pimples leave behind. I try to avoid touching my face, but honestly, I keep finding myself picking at them, which I know is the worst but it’s like I can’t help it. The other day, I used a pretty harsh exfoliating scrub because I thought maybe if I scrubbed my skin more, somehow the pimples and dark spots would just disappear, but nope, that just made things worse! Ugh! I read somewhere that certain products can help to remove dark spots from acne, and I’ve tried a few like vitamin C serums and other treatments, but nothing seems to work. Can someone please recommend what to use, or even what not to use? Like, what actually helps to get rid of pimples and those stubborn dark spots? Am I being way too impatient or what? Just wanna feel good in my skin again!

Doctors’ responses

What you’re experiencing with the sudden onset of acne and persistent dark spots often boils down to a combination of factors like hormones, diet, stress, or even changes in skin care routine. Acne often occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria can contribute to this. For dark spots, these are often a result of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is common after acne. Picking and harshly exfoliating can indeed make both acne and dark spots worse, as you’ve noticed.

When it comes to treating the dark spots, patience is key, unfortunately, these things can take time. For home treatment, aside from sunscreen which is non-negotiable, consider integrating ingredients like niacinamide and retinoids. These can help in reducing inflammation, hyperpigmentation and improving cell turnover respectively. Since you’ve tried vitamin C serums to no avail, consistency and pairing them with retinoids (not at the same time) might be pivotal. Be sure to use retinoids sparingly at first to avoid irritation and always follow with sunscreen in the morning. For your immediate acne concerns, over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid could help, but start slow; these could dry your skin if overused. Also, look into non-comedogenic moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores.

It might also be beneficial to consult a dermatologist if things aren’t improving; there are prescription treatments, including topical antibiotics and more advanced therapies, that could provide faster and more robust results. An expert can help tailor a regimen specific to your skin’s needs, considering any sensitivities you might have. Whatever you do, avoid harsh scrubs and try to reduce touching or picking at your face, since this can lead to further irritation and potential scars on top of dark spots. Stick to a gentle, consistent routine, and a visit to a professional if over-the-counter methods don’t yield results will often be your best route to clearer, healthier skin in the long term.
