detoxification juice - #13851

Rhea

I am really trying to figure this out because I've been feeling pretty awful lately. A few weeks ago, I started this detox program and thought a detoxification juice would help me feel better, but honestly, I’m not sure if it’s working or making things worse. I’ve been drinking these green detoxification juices morning and night thinking they’d give me a boost—like they promised! But now I’m super tired all the time, and my stomach doesn’t feel great... like, bloated and funny. I mean, I do know they say detoxification juice can be great for cleansing your body, but is there a chance I’m overdoing it? Also, I tried adding some ginger and apple to the detoxification juice to make it tastier, but the other day my friend said that might not be the best combo? Now I’m even more confused! Is it common to feel worse before feeling better? Shouldn't detoxification juice, like, help clear out toxins and give me energy instead? What am I missing here? Any advice on how to do this safer or if there's a better approach to detoxification that might not involve me feeling like this?

Doctors’ responses

It’s understandable to question how detoxification juices might be impacting how you feel, especially if you’re not seeing the benefits you expected. Detox juices, often marketed as remedies for fatigue and bloating, don’t always work as advertised and can sometimes lead to unintended consequences like you’re experiencing. Overusing these juices, particularly when replacing balanced meals, might contribute to nutrient deficiencies or an imbalance in electrolyte levels, both of which could make you feel more tired. If you’re consuming juices that are high in certain ingredients such as ginger or apple in excessive amounts, that could also lead to gastrointestinal discomfort or bloating.

It’s a common misconception that detox juices alone can cleanse the body. Our bodies are naturally equipped with organs like the liver and kidneys to remove toxins efficiently, and requiring no specific detox aids. The key here is moderation and variety. Consider returning to a more balanced intake, ensuring your diet includes a range of nutrients. Incorporating whole foods like vegetables and fiber, alongside adequate hydration, usually supports your natural detoxification systems better than any juice cleanse.

To move forward safely, you might try gradually reducing your intake of these juices, supplementing your diet with more solid, nutrient-dense meals. If you continue to experience symptoms like persistent fatigue or bloating, it may warrant an evaluation by a healthcare professional to rule out other underlying conditions that might be contributing to these issues. They could also help guide any further dietary adjustments. If you’re aiming for more energy and better digestion, consulting with a registered dietitian could also provide personalized and sustainable strategies that align with your lifestyle.
