how to treat loose motion at home - #13968

Aditi

I am really worried about my stomach right now. Last week, I think I ate something that didn’t quite sit right with me, and ever since then, I've been dealing with loose motion. At first, it was just a little discomfort, but now it’s like I can’t keep anything in. I’ve tried to stick to bland foods but honestly, that’s been hard! Like, how to treat loose motion at home when you’re juggling work and a family? I’m thinking maybe ginger tea or something, but I don’t know if that’s enough. Should I just skip solid food all together? I also read somewhere about hydration being super important when you have loose motion, but like, how do I know when I’m dehydrated? Can loose motion be a sign of something serious? I had a friend who had a bad experience after ignoring it — he ended up in the ER! I really hope I don’t go down that road. What are some reliable home remedies that work for loose motion, like is rice water a good idea? I just want to nbe comfortable again... Do I need to avoid anything specific? All these thoughts are just buzzing in my head, and I really need some clear advice!

Doctors’ responses

When it comes to managing loose motion or diarrhea at home, it’s crucial to focus on hydration and proper nutrition. Start with fluid replenishment; dehydration is a primary concern, so sipping on oral rehydration solutions (ORS) is vital. You can either buy a pre-made mix from the pharmacy or prepare a simple homemade version by dissolving six teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt in a liter of clean water. Drink small amounts frequently throughout the day. Signs of dehydration include excessive thirst, dry mouth, reduced urine output, and dizziness. If you notice these, it’s important to act quickly to restore fluids. Regarding foods, stick to the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast - which are gentle on the stomach. Rice water is also soothing, as it helps to add bulk to the stool. You don’t need to skip solid food whole altogether, but rather focus on well-cooked, bland foods. Avoid dairy, fatty, or heavily spiced dishes as they can exacerbate symptoms. Ginger tea may help soothe your tummy, but it’s not a cure. If symptoms persist beyond a few days, show blood or pus in the stool, or there are accompanying severe abdominal pain or fever, seek medical attention. These can be signs of a more serious condition like an infection or inflammatory disease, and ignoring them (like your friend’s case) can lead to worse complications. Keeping stress low is challenging with your busy schedule, but it can also influence gut health. Remember, if symptoms are severe or persistent, consulting with a healthcare provider should not be delayed.
