what will happen if we apply aloe vera on face - #13993

Ayush

I am really curious about what will happen if we apply aloe vera on face. Last week, I had this bad sunburn from being outside too long, and a friend suggested using aloe vera. I went to the store and picked up this huge tub of pure aloe vera gel. Once I got home, I slathered it all over my face, hoping it would help cool my skin down. But honestly, I felt a bit nervous afterward, like what if it makes my skin worse?! I kept reading online, and some people say it clears up acne and helps with moisture, but others mention they had weird reactions. Like, I have sensitive skin that sometimes breaks out, plus I’ve had eczema, and I'm kinda scared of ending up with a rash. I just wanna know, what will happen if we apply aloe vera on face, especially for someone with a history of skin issues? Should I keep using it, or is it better to avoid it altogether? Also, any tips on how much is too much? I used it for a few days, and while my sunburn felt better, I’m not really sure if my face looks any different. Thanks for any advice!

Doctors’ responses

Applying aloe vera on the face can have a range of effects, especially depending on individual skin sensitivities and conditions. Aloe vera is widely known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which can definitely be beneficial for calming sunburn, as you’ve experienced. It helps in moisturizing the skin and reducing irritation. However, considering your history of sensitive skin and eczema, there are a few things to keep in mind. Aloe Vera is generally well-tolerated, but some people can experience allergic reactions, resulting in redness, hives, or further irritation. This is because aloe contains several active compounds that can be irritating for certain skin types, particularly when used excessively or under certain conditions.

If you have sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions, it is always advisable to do a patch test. Apply a small amount of aloe vera to an inconspicuous area, such as the inside of your forearm, and wait for 24 hours to check for any adverse reactions before using it extensively on your face. In terms of applications, moderation is crucial. Using a thin layer once or twice a day is generally recommended rather than “slathering” it on, which could overwhelm your skin, potentially causing issues. Since your skin felt better after using it, it might be worth continuing, but cautiously. Should you notice any new irritation, increased redness, or rashes, it’s best to discontinue and possibly consult a dermatologist who can offer an alternative solution tailored to your skin needs.

Be cautious with additional products too – combining aloe with other active ingredients right now could further irritate your skin. With your mention of breaks out and eczema, avoiding products with alcohol or artificial additives in combination with aloe is sensible. For ongoing skin issues like eczema or sensitivity-related acne, a professionally tailored skincare regimen might be beneficial. Your skin’s response over the next few days should guide your decision, if you don’t see further relief or the problem escalates, it’s wise to seek professional advice.
