Skin & Hair Concerns

milk is good for acne

Aisha

I am really confused and worried about my skin lately. I've started breaking out more than usual, and it's super frustrating because I've tried different skincare products and treatments with no luck. A friend mentioned that milk is good for acne, and I'm wondering if that could actually be true. I've heard before that dairy can sometimes make things worse for some people, which makes this all more confusing. A couple of weeks ago, I switched to drinking almond milk instead of regular milk, hoping that might help clear my skin up. But now I keep reading articles that say milk is good for acne due to its nutrients, and I just don't know what to believe! I want to get my skin back to normal without making things worse. Should I try adding milk back into my diet? Are there specific types of milk that are better? Or should I just stick to what I've been doing? I guess I just want to figure out if milk is good for acne really means something or if it’s just another myth. Sorry if I'm rambling, but I’m really unsure and could use some advice from you all!!

Doctors' responses

The relationship between milk and acne is still a debated topic in dermatology, so the mixed messages you’re getting are understandable. Some research suggests that dairy might exacerbate acne in certain individuals, especially varieties like skim milk. This could be due to hormones and bioactive molecules in milk that might stimulate oil glands and worsen breakouts. However, for others, milk could seem neutral or potentially even beneficial due to certain nutrients they contain that support skin health, such as vitamin D and calcium. Considering you’ve already switched to almond milk, observe if this modification influences your acne over a couple of weeks. Tracking your skin response will ultimately give you personal insights. If you decide to reintroduce milk, try a moderate quantity and observe any changes. Focus more on your entire diet, looking at overall patterns rather than just one food. Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can beneficially impact your skin’s health. Additionally, ensure you’re hydrating well, managing stress, and not overusing skincare products which can collectively influence acne. If you don’t see improvements or if condition worsens, consider consulting a dermatologist who can analyze your situation in detail and suggest treatments based on your specific needs.
