acne scars home treatment - #14110

Kashvi

I am really struggling with these pesky acne scars that just won’t seem to fade away! A few months ago, I had a pretty bad breakout, you know the type that makes you feel super self-conscious? Well, I managed to clear up the acne, but now I’m left with these red and brown marks on my face that make me feel like I'm wearing a mask. I am wondering if acne scars home treatment might actually work? I’ve tried some over-the-counter creams and stuff but honestly, I don’t see much improvement. Last week, I came across some DIY remedies online for acne scars home treatment, like using lemon juice and honey, but I'm not sure if that's legit or just a waste of time. I mean, what if it makes it worse? And I read about the benefits of aloe vera too, but how do I actually use it? Should I apply it directly or mix it with something else? I am just kind of desperate at this point and really want to avoid expensive treatments at the dermatologist if I can. Has anyone here had good results with acne scars home treatment? What worked for you guys? I’m all ears for any tips or personal experiences!

Doctors’ responses

Acne scars can indeed be frustrating, especially when you’re trying to get rid of them on your own. While some home remedies can support skin healing, it’s important to approach them with caution to avoid skin irritation or further damage. First, it’s good to recognize that acne scars can be multiple types, like atrophic scars (indented) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which are the flat red or brown spots left by acne. Your mention of red and brown marks suggests post-inflammatory changes rather than true scarring, which is somewhat encouraging because they can fade over time with proper care. Over-the-counter products with ingredients like niacinamide, retinoids, or hydroquinone can help lighten hyperpigmentation by boosting cell turnover and evening out skin tone. Retinoids, in particular, also help remodel collagen, which can improve the appearance of scars over time. When it comes to DIY options such as lemon juice and honey, it’s wise to be cautious. Lemon juice’s acidity can irritate your skin and increase sun sensitivity. Honey is milder, with soothing and antibacterial properties, but its effect on scars specifically is limited. Aloe vera can be beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory benefits and ability to soothe the skin, and it can be applied directly from the plant or as a store-bought gel to the affected area once or twice a day. Ensure it’s 100% pure to avoid added irritants. It’s vital to incorporate sun protection as UV exposure can worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even when indoors, will protect the skin and aid in fading the marks. Keep in mind, some of these products, particularly retinoids, can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so this step can’t be skipped. If you’re not seeing results with these approaches after several months, or if the scarring is more severe, consulting a dermatologist might actually save time and frustration in the long run. They can offer targeted treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy that might be more effective. Always test any product or remedy on a small skin area first to ensure you’re not allergic or sensitive to it. Remember, some patience is needed since skin healing is a slow process, but with consistent care, improvement is achievable.
