baking soda + lemon juice - #14350

Sara

I am pretty confused about some stuff going on with my tummy after trying this DIY remedy with baking soda and lemon juice. I read online that mixing baking soda and lemon juice can help with digestion and maybe even heartburn. I was desperate because I’ve been dealing with this annoying bloating for weeks now, like no matter what I eat, I just feel full and uncomfortable. 🙁 So, I tried it out, right? I put a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and added some lemon juice. It fizzed up and seemed like it was gonna be fine! But after drinking it, I felt a bit nauseous, like my stomach was turning but I'm not sure if that was normal? Like, is that what happens when you mix baking soda and lemon juice? Should I have expected that? It’s been two days and the bloating is still there. Should I keep trying to use baking soda and lemon juice? Or is it making things worse? I heard baking soda is supposed to neutralize stomach acid or something, but now I’m just worried that maybe I did it wrong or if it’s not gonna work for me. I’d really appreciate any thoughts on this! Thanks!

Using baking soda and lemon juice together as a home remedy for digestive issues can be a bit tricky. While baking soda can sometimes help neutralize stomach acid due to its alkaline nature, it’s not the best remedy for everyone or all types of digestive discomfort. The combination with lemon juice can cause a fizzy reaction which, while safe to consume in small amounts, might not be the best thing for your stomach if you’re experiencing nausea or bloating, particularly because acidic lemon might irritate the gut. The nausea you felt after drinking the mixture might be due to rapid ingestion of the fizzy mix, or your stomach reacting to the sudden shift in pH balance. For bloating, there are many underlying causes, ranging from dietary habits to more serious conditions like IBS or food intolerances. Before continuing with DIY treatments, consider monitoring your diet and symptoms closely. Foods high in fiber, activities like walking, and ensuring you’re not consuming gas-producing foods (like beans or carbonated drinks) may help. Peppermint tea or ginger could offer gentler relief as well. However, if symptoms persist or are accompanied by severe pain, weight loss, or any new, worsening changes, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. Continuing the baking soda and lemon juice regimen without a clear understanding of your condition might provoke further discomfort. Importantly, frequent use of baking soda for heartburn relief is not typically recommended due to potential imbalances in your body’s electrolytes and effects on your overall acid-base balance. Rather than self-medicating with household items, contacting a healthcare provider for personalized advice would be the safest course, as they can help identify the root cause of your bloating and offer guidance tailored to your specific needs and medical history.
