dengue fever food to eat - #14485

Anya

I am seriously worried about my health right now. I had feeling super tired for a few days, plus a bad headache and this rash showing up, and finally got tested for dengue fever. The doctor confirmed it yesterday. I’ve heard about dengue fever food to eat but I'm not sure what's best. I mean, should I stick to just like bland stuff or can I have fruits? I really don’t wanna mess up my recovery. My friend said I should eat more protein, but like, how much? Is chicken okay? What about spicy food? I tend to like spicy food a lot! I tried googling dengue fever food to eat but it’s all over the place. Some say soups are good... is chicken soup a thing? And what about hydration, do I just drink water or can I have like coconut water? I used to drink that a lot when I was sick as a kid. Also, I’m scared because I read that not eating properly can make symptoms worse or something like that. Can someone pls share what worked for them or what their doctors told them about dengue fever food to eat? I'm feeling pretty lost. Thank you!

Doctors' responses

When managing dengue fever, focusing on nutrition can indeed support your recovery, but it’s essential to combine it with medical advice, given the potential severity of the condition. First off, hydration is critical. Dengue can lead to dehydration, so drinking plenty of fluids is vital. Water is excellent, but coconut water can also be a good choice due to its electrolytes which help keep your body balanced. Oral rehydration solutions are also quite helpful. As for food, maintaining a balanced diet is key, but prioritizing easily digestible options can minimize stress on your system. Chicken soup is generally well-tolerated and provides proteins along with hydration, and is usually a safe bet unless otherwise advised by your care team. Regarding your interest in other proteins like chicken, it’s fine to consume it as long as it’s cooked thoroughly; proteins help in muscle repair and recovery. Fruits that are rich in vitamins, like citrus fruits, can bolster your immune system; however, be mindful of how they’re prepared—avoid fruit juices with added sugars. When it comes to spicy foods, it’s best to avoid them for now as they can irritate your stomach or exacerbate any stomach issues related to dengue. Soups or stews that are mild are quite comforting and nutritious. Bland foods are suggested mainly because they’re easier on a potentially sensitive stomach. Roughage or too-oily foods can be difficult to digest during this time. Vanilla-flavored yogurt, oatmeal, or clear broths can be incorporated into your diet. Careful monitoring is crucial; if symptoms elevate, always seek immediate medical attention, especially if you notice bleeding or severe pain. Your primary focus should be on rest, ample hydration, and easily digestible foods to support your recovery. As much as personal stories are enlightening, every medical case is unique, so align closely with advice from healthcare professionals regarding your specific needs.
