pomegranate in loose motion - #14709

Myra

I am dealing with some crazy, intense digestive issues and really not sure what to do. For the last couple of days, I've had loose motion like every couple of hours, and it's just exhausting! A friend mentioned that eating pomegranate could help settle my stomach, but I'm kind of worried about introducing anything new when I'm already feeling this way. I do remember reading somewhere that pomegranate in loose motion can be beneficial, but does that really mean eating the raw fruit or more like drinking pomegranate juice? Yesterday, I tried some pomegranate juice and thought it might help, but honestly, I felt like it made things worse! It’s like, do I need to be cautious about pomegranate in loose motion, or should I just keep eating it and see if my body adjusts? I've also been drinking clear fluids, but my stomach still feels upset. Is it common to get confused about pomegranate in loose motion with other remedies? Any advice would be super helpful as I just want to feel normal again! Would love to hear if anyone else has dealt with this and found relief with pomegranate or something else. Thanks in advance!

Doctors’ responses

Regarding your concerns about using pomegranate to help with loose motions, it’s important to understand how it might fit into managing your current symptoms. Pomegranate - particularly the seeds and juice - are often suggested as a home remedy for diarrhea due to their tannin content, which can have a mild binding effect on the intestines. However, as with many remedies, responses can vary widely between individuals. It’s possible that pomegranates might not agree with your digestive system right now or might even exacerbate your symptoms. It makes sense that you felt worse after the juice, possibly due to its acidity or sugar content, which can sometimes irritate sensitive stomachs.

Rather than introducing new foods, it might be safer to start with more traditional approaches. Continue keeping hydrated with clear fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions, or diluted broths to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Avoid anything too sugary, caffeinated, or dairy-based as these might upset your stomach further. As your symptoms improve, consider introducing binders like rice, bananas, and plain toast gradually. Watching for signs of dehydration, such as dizziness or reduced urination, is crucial, and if these occur, you should seek prompt medical attention. If the diarrhea persists for more than a couple of days, becomes bloody, or is accompanied by high fever or severe pain, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out more serious conditions. They can perform tests to identify any underlying infections or issues requiring specific treatment. Keeping your body well-nourished and adequately hydrated should be your priority, and sometimes sticking to bland diets for the short term is necessary while your system settles down.
