fruits for dengue patient

Kian

I am really worried about my brother. He was diagnosed with dengue just a few days ago. He had all the classic symptoms, like high fever and joint pains. It's been tough watching him go through this, and I'm trying to find any way to help him recover faster. I read somewhere about certain fruits for dengue patient recovery, but I'm not sure which ones are actually beneficial. Like, I've seen suggestions for papaya and pomegranate — do those really help? He hasn’t had much appetite lately, but I'm wondering if incorporating specific fruits for dengue patient like these can boost his recovery. I also heard that watermelon might be good for staying hydrated, which is super important, right? Would fruits for dengue patient help with increasing his platelet count too? He’s really weak and any little bit of energy from fruits might be just what he needs. What else should I look for, and how should I prepare them? Should I give him juices or whole fruits? I'm feeling a bit lost here and just wanna do what's best for him during this tough time. Any advice would be sooo appreciated!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to helping your brother recover from dengue, focusing on hydration and a balanced diet is indeed crucial. Fruits can be a helpful part of his diet, especially those rich in vitamins and fluids. Staying hydrated is very important given how dengue can lead to dehydration due to high fevers and the overall demand on the body. Watermelon is an excellent choice because it has high water content, so it’s good you’re considering it. Papaya and pomegranate are often talked about in the context of dengue. Papaya, in particular, has been studied for its potential to help increase platelet count, which is often a concern in dengue. Some preliminary studies suggest papaya leaf extract might contribute to higher platelet production, although more conclusive evidence is still needed. Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants and provides a source of iron which can be beneficial, especially if there’s been blood loss or low hemoglobin levels. As for how to take them, the choice between juices or whole fruits depends on his preference and what he can tolerate. Whole fruits provide fiber which is good for digestion, but if he has trouble eating or a lack of appetite, fresh juices are easier to consume and can still provide hydration and nutrients. If you prepare juices, try to avoid added sugars and ensure the fruits are washed properly to minimize any infection risk. Other fruits like kiwi, oranges, or guavas are good options because they’re rich in vitamin C, which supports the immune system. But remember that fruits alone won’t replace the medical treatment he’s receiving for dengue. Keep an eye on his overall health, and watch out for warning signs like severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, or feeling very weak and fatigued — these could signal complications and would necessitate immediate medical attention. Consistent follow-up with a healthcare provider is essential to monitor his condition and tailor his care plan as needed.
