why motions occur frequently - #15081

Ayaan

I am a bit worried about my health lately because I've been noticing that why motions occur frequently for me. It started a few weeks ago, I thought it was just a stomach bug or something, but it’s like my body has decided that I need to go run to the bathroom every few hours! At first, I brushed it off as something I ate that didn't sit well, but then it just kept happening.. I track my meals, and my fiber intake isn’t crazy or anything. It’s not just the frequency; sometimes, it’s pretty urgent too, like I gotta go right away! Kinda embarrassing to mention this, but even if I'm at work or out with friends, that urgency hits and I have to bolt. Plus, I sometimes feel bloated and maybe an odd cramping sensation, which just adds to my confusion. I’ve tried drinking more water and chilling on spicy foods but nothing seems to be helpin’. My doc ran a few tests – nothing too major, just blood and stool samples – but I’m still waiting on those results. Why do motions occur frequently like this? Is it something to really worry about, or could it be just stress messing with my system? Anyone else been in this boat? I'm just looking for some insights while I wait!

Doctors’ responses

Frequent bowel movements can be caused by a variety of reasons, and nailing down the exact cause often requires considering several factors. Since you’re already awaiting test results from your doctor, that’s a good step towards understanding what’s going on. A common cause for increased frequency of bowel movements could be dietary changes, even subtle ones that might not seem significant. Stress and anxiety can also contribute to such symptoms; they can alter gut motility leading to frequent or urgent stools. Conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can present in a similar way, where the bowel habits are disrupted along with symptoms like bloating or cramping. It’s worth considering if stress has spiked recently which might correlate with your symptoms. Another aspect to ponder is any recent travel or exposure to settings where a GI infection could have been acquired, although you mentioned it that having started a few weeks back. It’s reassuring that you’re getting lab work done because infections or inflammation of the gut may be detected in those tests. Depending on the outcome, your doctor might delve into further investigations including imaging studies, or refer you to a gastroenterologist. Meanwhile, it’s a good idea to maintain a balanced diet, avoiding known triggers for such symptoms like high-fat or overly processed foods. Staying hydrated, as you’re already doing, remains important. If you notice any concerning signs like weight loss, blood in stool, or severe abdominal pain, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider immediately. Keep monitoring your diet and stressors in the meantime as this might offer additional clues.
