scar healing cream - #15124

Navya

I am really confused and kinda worried about something. A couple of months ago, I had this surgery, and now I have this pretty noticeable scar on my arm. I’ve been hearing a lot about scar healing cream and wondering if it actually works. My doctor mentioned I should be using something, but I’m not sure what to get. There are so many options! Some people say their scar healing cream made a big difference, while others say it didn’t help at all. I’m just uncertain. I want to make sure I’m doing the right thing to help it heal. The scar's still kind of red and a bit raised, and I’ve read that the right scar healing cream can really make a difference. I even tried a couple of over-the-counter creams but haven’t seen much improvement, which is making me feel frustrated. Do you guys have any recommendations on the best scar healing cream that actually works? Or should I ask my doctor for something specific? I guess I just don’t want to waste time or money on something that’s not gonna do anything. If anyone had a similar experience with scar healing cream, I’d love to hear about what worked for you or what didn't.

Doctors’ responses

Choosing the right scar healing cream can indeed be a bit overwhelming given the numerous options out there. Scar healing creams work by hydrating the skin, potentially reducing redness and improving the overall appearance of the scar. Topical treatments can be genuinely beneficial, particularly in the early stages of scar formation. Key ingredients to look for include silicone, which is often recommended for its scar-reducing properties. Silicone gel products or sheeting have a good track record in flattening raised scars and alleviating redness, so they’re definitely worth considering. Additionally, ingredients like hyaluronic acid, onion extract, and vitamin E can also contribute to the healing process, albeit with varying degrees of effectiveness.

It’s crucial to be consistent with the application; applying these creams or gels at least once or twice daily as directed is important for visible results, though it can take several weeks to notice significant changes. If over-the-counter options haven’t yielded the desired effect, or if the scarring is quite pronounced, discussing with your doctor is a wise next step. They might prescribe a more potent option or recommend treatments like steroid injections or laser therapy, depending on the scar’s characteristics.

Remember that each individual’s skin responds differently to treatments, so what works effectively for one person may not do the same for another. To optimize healing, combine topical treatments with good skincare practices, such as keeping the scar moisturized, protected from the sun, and avoiding irritating it through excessive scrubbing or rubbing. If you experience any unusual reactions such as severe irritation or allergic response, stop using the product and seek medical advice.
