can green tea cause pimples - #15164

Palak

I am kinda freaking out because I’ve been drinking a lot of green tea lately, like seriously, it’s been my go-to drink every day, and now I'm wondering, can green tea cause pimples?? I mean, my skin wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty manageable until a few weeks ago. I started this new detox routine, and part of it was upping my green tea intake to like 3-4 cups daily. I heard it’s good for you, antioxidants and all, right? But now, outta nowhere, I've got breakouts popping up, and I can't help but think the green tea is behind it. My friends keep saying it’s just the usual hormones or maybe stress from work, but I can’t shake this feeling that the green tea might be a factor. Has anyone else faced this?? Like, can green tea really cause pimples?? I thought it was supposed to be good for clear skin! It’s so frustrating because I try to eat healthy and stay hydrated, and now I’m battling these zits, ugh!! Oh, and I did cut out some dairy around the same time too, so maybe it's not just the green tea? But seriously, can green tea cause pimples or are there other reasons I should consider? I really hope it’s not something I'm stuck with for long!

Doctors’ responses

Green tea isn’t typically known to cause pimples, and it’s often touted for its health benefits, including potential positive effects on the skin due to its antioxidant properties. However, everyone’s body can react differently to dietary changes. While it’s not directly linked to skin breakouts, there are a few things to consider. Consuming green tea excessively might contribute to increased caffeine intake, which can sometimes exacerbate stress and hormonal fluctuations, possibly affecting your skin. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, this could be a factor. Since you mentioned accepting a detox routine, other changes in diet could also play a role. When you shift to a different eating habit, sometimes your skin can go through a period of adjustment. Even though green tea may not be the culprit, it’s worth considering other lifestyle factors, such as stress, sleep, and any skincare changes. You also mentioned cutting out dairy, and while some people find that reduces acne, dietary changes can sometimes lead to adjustments in your skin’s condition, temporarily worsening it before improvement. Keep track of your skin reactions and maybe taper your green tea consumption to find a comfort level. If the breakouts persist or worsen, consider consulting with a dermatologist to rule out other skin conditions or allergies. They can provide a more comprehensive evaluation tailored to your diet, skin type, and health.
