what are symptoms of loose motions - #15215

Nikhil

I am really confused and kinda worried about my current situation. About a week ago, my stomach just started acting weird after I ate at this new restaurant, and now I'm dealing with loose motions like multiple times a day. At first I thought maybe it was just something I ate and that it would pass, but I can't seem to shake it off. The loose motions are really frequent, like just when I think it's calmed down, bam, I'm running to the bathroom again. I feel really weak, and my belly is making these weird noises. What are the symptoms of loose motions that I should even be keeping an eye on? Are there other signs I should worry about? I also feel a lil' nauseous, but not throwing up or anything. A friend suggested I should drink more water, which I am doing, but should I be taking any medications? I read somewhere that loose motions can sometimes lead to dehydration, which is scary. Is there a point where I should be seeking immediate medical attention, or does this kinda thing usually resolve itself? Honestly, it’s just a bit overwhelming to deal with right now. Anyone else had this and what are symptoms of loose motions that pointed to something serious? Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

Loose motions, also referred to as diarrhea, typically present as frequent, watery stools and can often be accompanied by abdominal cramps, bloating, and audible bowel sounds. These symptoms are sometimes caused by an infection or simply the result of consuming something that disagreed with your digestive system. The nausea you’re experiencing can also be a common symptom alongside loose motions, and it’s good that you’re hydrating—that’s crucial. Diarrhea can indeed result in dehydration, characterized by thirst, decreased urination, dry mouth, and fatigue. Keep tracking these symptoms closely. You should certainly seek medical attention if you notice blood in your stool, if your symptoms persist beyond a week without improvement, or if you’re unable to keep fluids down, which suggests you’re at risk of severe dehydration. While avoiding self-prescribed medication, an over-the-counter oral rehydration solution might help in managing mild dehydration. Also, consider a mild diet—foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) can be gentle on your stomach. Nevertheless, diarrhea often resolves with time, but if you experience prolonged symptoms or worsening conditions, a healthcare professional can help determine if an infection or another underlying issue, like inflammatory bowel disease, is present. If you ever feel overwhelmed by the symptoms’ severity, especially if there’s excessive weakness or ongoing nausea, don’t hesitate reaching out to a doctor. Even with no vomiting, nausea post-diarrhea can hint at various factors that your physician can assist through a thorough assessment.
