foods to stop loose motion - #15228

Rian

I am really worried because I’ve been dealing with these really annoying stomach issues for the past couple of weeks. First it started off as just feeling a little queasy, but then I was hit with loose motion that's been so bad, I can't even leave the house without worrying about finding a bathroom. I talked to my doc and he suggested I should look into specific foods to stop loose motion, but like what foods should I actually eat? I’ve tried eating some plain rice and bananas, but it doesn't seem to be helping much. I mean, I thought those were the go-to foods to stop loose motion, right? Yesterday, I attempted to have toast, but that just seemed to upset my stomach even more. Ugh! I'm feeling super frustrated and just want to feel normal again. Are there any other solid foods to stop loose motion? Like, what about yogurt? I’ve heard some say it might help, while others say it might make things worse. Should I stick to bland foods only? I could really use some guidance here, because at this point everything I eat feels like a gamble!

Doctors’ responses

If you’re dealing with persistent loose motions, it’s important to first consider the underlying causes. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, it could indicate an infection or other medical condition that requires attention beyond dietary changes. However, when it comes to diet, there’s several foods which might help firm things up. The BRAT diet, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast, is often recommended because these foods are low in fiber, easy to digest, and can help firm up stools. Since you’ve tried rice and bananas, it’s worth examining other options. Plain boiled potatoes can be a good addition, as well as cooked carrots or steamed chicken, which also have a binding effect. Yogurt is quite helpful as well, especially plain yogurt with active cultures, which can help replenish the good bacteria in your gut and restore balance. Avoid sugary, fried, or high-fat foods, as they can aggravate your digestive system. Stick to small, frequent meals to avoid overloading your stomach. Additionally, stay hydrated—consider oral rehydration solutions to maintain your electrolyte balance, which is crucial if you’re experiencing frequent loose stools. If your symptoms persist or worsen, however, a follow-up with a healthcare provider would be recommended to rule out any underlying issues that may require medical intervention.
