how long does viral fever last - #15416

Yuvan

I am worried because my son came down with a fever last week. He looked so flushed and tired, I thought it was just a common cold at first, you know? But then the fever spiked, and I couldn’t help but take him to our family doc. They said it’s likely viral fever, but I have no idea how long does viral fever last! It’s been five days now, and he still feels awful. He’s been drinking fluids, I’ve given him some over-the-counter meds, but the fever just won’t quit. I read somewhere that it could last anywhere from a few days to two weeks, but what if it drags on longer? Should I be doing something different? I feel like I might need to take him back for another check-up, but I really just want to know how long does viral fever last in kids usually. The doc didn’t really give a clear timeline, and I'm super anxious about it. Is there a point where I should be more concerned, like, when to call the doctor instead of waiting? I just keep counting the days... it’s exhausting!

In most cases, a viral fever in children typically lasts around 3 to 5 days, although it can stretch up to 7 to 10 days depending on the type of virus and the child’s overall health. Some viral infections can cause a prolonged fever for about 2 weeks, but it’s less common. It’s encouraging that you’re ensuring he stays hydrated and monitoring his symptoms with over-the-counter medications. If your son’s fever persists beyond a week or if it seems to worsen, it’s reasonable to consult your doctor again. Look out for any red-flag symptoms that might require immediate attention, such as persistent high fever over 102°F (39°C), difficulty breathing, severe headache, persistent vomiting, or any signs of dehydration like dry mouth, crying without tears, or decreased urination. Such symptoms may suggest a need for further evaluation or possibly an alternative diagnosis beyond a standard viral fever. Meanwhile, continue encouraging fluids, allowing plenty of rest, and dressing him in lightweight clothing to help regulate body temperature. Keep in touch with your healthcare provider or consider making another appointment if the fever lingers beyond typical timeframe or you’re feeling uneasy about any symptoms. Your vigilance plays a crucial part in managing the situation, but don’t hesitate to seek further medical advice if you feel it’s necessary for peace of mind or if the symptoms change.
