sugarcane juice in loose motion - #15570

Janvi

I am really worried because I started having loose motions a couple of days ago. It all began after I went to this little cafe and had some fresh sugarcane juice. Honestly, I've always loved sugarcane juice, and it felt refreshing that day. But now I'm like questioning if that could be the cause of my loose motion. The first day, I thought it was just something I ate, but now I can't stop running to the bathroom! It’s been 3 days and I’m getting nervous. I also noticed my stomach feels bloated and kinda cramps up sometimes. I've been drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, but what if this sugarcane juice in loose motion is serious? I did feel a bit better yesterday but then boom, back to the bathroom! I read online that sugarcane juice can sometimes upset digestive systems but I never thought it would happen to me. Should I avoid everything sweet now or is there a way to resolve this? Should I see a doctor, or is it normal to have sugarcane juice in loose motion for this long? I’m not feeling too great here, any advice?

Doctors’ responses

Sugarcane juice itself is unlikely to be the direct cause of prolonged loose motions, but it’s possible that the juice was contaminated or not properly handled, leading to a gastrointestinal infection—often a source of concern with street-vended or fresh-pressed juices. Given that your symptoms have persisted for three days, it might be a sign of a mild infection or gastroenteritis. Monitoring your symptoms is essential. If you are experiencing severe dehydration signs, like extreme thirst, little or no urination, deep yellow urine, dizziness, or weakness, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately. For now, continue to hydrate well with water and oral rehydration solutions if necessary, as these help in managing fluid loss and maintaining electrolyte balance. Stick to bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) which may help bulk up your stool. It’s wise to temporarily avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages, as these can exacerbate diarrhea. You don’t need to avoid all sweet things forever—just for now till your system stabilizes. Consider probiotics or yogurts to help rebalance your gut flora, although efficacy varies. Certainly, if symptoms persist beyond a week, or you detect blood in stools, or have high fever, consulting a healthcare professional would be advisable. They can provide specific treatments if an infection or other digestive issue is identified. In short, try managing symptoms at home but keep an eye on anything that signals worsening, especially given your bothersome stomach cramps and bloating.
