which fruit is good for loose motion - #15802

Keya

I am dealing with this annoying situation where I've been experiencing loose motions for the last couple of days. It started after eating out last weekend, and I've been cautious but still having trouble. I remember as a kid, my grandma used to say certain fruits can help, but I can't really recall which fruit is good for loose motion. I've tried bananas, thinking they might help because people say that, but I don't feel like it did much. Now I'm wondering if I should be eating apples or maybe papaya, but then again, I've heard mixed things about those. Plus, I don't want to mess up my stomach even more. I saw online that some fruits could actually worsen the situation, which is really confusing! I really could use some insights. Which fruit is good for loose motion? Is there a specific type of apple I should look for? Maybe there's something I'm missing here, like how to prepare the fruit for it to be effective. I'm desperate for some relief and just want this to stop! Can anyone share their experiences or knowledge on which fruit is good for loose motion and if I should avoid anything while I figure this out? Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

When dealing with loose motions, choosing the right fruit can make a difference in managing your symptoms. Among the fruits commonly advised, bananas are actually one of the best options. They are known for their ability to add bulk to your stool, thanks to their high pectin content, a type of soluble fiber. If bananas haven’t seemed effective, it may be worth giving them another try, but be sure they are ripe, as the resistant starch in unripe bananas might not be as helpful. Avoid anything under-ripe, which might not have the same beneficial effect.

Applesauce, instead of raw apples, can be another gentle option because it’s easier on the gut, providing soluble fiber as well, aiding in forming stool. However, eating raw apples is often not recommended as the fiber content can sometimes aggravate your symptoms when consumed in whole form, but cooked apples can be less irritating. Regarding papaya, while it’s generally soft and easy on the stomach, it might not always have specific benefits for loose motion itself but isn’t likely to worsen your condition when eaten in moderation.

Remember, during this time, staying hydrated is crucial due to fluid losses. Oral rehydration solutions or transparent fluids like broth can be important alongside these fruits. If this doesn’t lead to improvement after a couple of days, or you experience severe symptoms like significant dehydration signs, blood in stool, or high fever, do seek medical care promptly. It’s important to address what might be a more serious underlying condition. While dietary adjustments can support recovery, they aren’t substitutes for medical evaluation when needed.
