liver detox fruits - #15992

Myra

I am really struggling to understand this whole liver detox fruits thing. Few months ago, I started feeling super sluggish and my friend mentioned trying some liver detox fruits, like oranges and avocados, thinking it could help. I wasn’t sure what they meant at first! Well, I tried adding more fruits to my diet—like grapefruits and beets too, and all that stuff that’s apparently good for liver detox—but I cant really tell if it’s working. I still feel tired, and sometimes I feel this weird heaviness in my stomach. I even had some blood work done, and the doc said my liver enzymes were a bit off but didn’t give me a clear answer on whether these liver detox fruits would make a difference. I’m kinda confused about how much these fruits can actually help with liver detox, or if it’s just another fad. Are there specific liver detox fruits that I should focus on more? Or am I missing something? I honestly just want to feel normal again! Could've I been overdoing it with these liver detox fruits without realizing? Anyone else felt this way while trying out these fruits?

Doctors' responses

While it’s tempting to seek out liver detox fruits to address sluggishness and fatigue, it’s important to approach the idea of liver detoxification with a bit of caution. The liver is naturally designed to detoxify the body, so the notion that certain fruits can magically detox the liver is somewhat misleading. However, some fruits can support liver health due to their nutrient contents. Oranges and avocados, for example, provide vitamins and antioxidants which can benefit overall health, including liver function, but they aren’t a cure-all’.

Regarding your symptoms, fatigue and a heavy feeling in the stomach, along with elevated liver enzymes, might need closer medical attention. It’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider to understand the underlying causes, which could range from a liver condition to other health issues. While adding fruits like grapefruits and beets to your diet can contribute to a balanced diet, there’s no need to overconsume them, thinking they alone can resolve liver issues. Grapefruit, in particular, can interact with medications and affect liver enzymes in unpredictable ways, so moderation is key.

Incorporating a balanced diet is beneficial, focusing on a variety of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Staying hydrated and avoiding excessive alcohol and fatty foods is more impactful for liver health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, particularly with liver enzyme irregularities, follow up with a healthcare provider for further testing or treatment. Specific medical interventions might be necessary, depending on the root cause of your symptoms, and not addressing these with a proper medical approach can possibly delay diagnosis or treatment.
