liver function tamil - #16019

Arya

I am really worried about my liver function, and I don't even know if I'm asking the right people but here I am. A few months back, I started feeling very fatigued and had this weird sense of nausea, which got me all freaked out. Went to a doc, and they did some blood tests and other stuff, and they said my liver function levels are not normal. Like, they were higher than they should be, and I didn’t understand anything they were saying in Tamil about "liver function." I mean, what does that even mean? I tried looking it up in Tamil, but it’s just confusing! I mean, I drink maybe once in a while, but I never thought that would affect liver function. The doc said something about fatty liver which sounded serious but no one really explained it clearly. Should I be worried? What am I supposed to do about my liver function? Like, do I change my diet? Cut down on carbs? Or is it just about drinking more water? Some friend mentioned turmeric and other home remedies, and now I’m so mixed up I can't think straight! Any advice would be super helpful because I need to get a grip on my liver function situation and figure out what my next steps should be. Thank you!

Doctors’ responses

It sounds like your main concern is understanding what’s happening with your liver and how to address those elevated liver function tests. Elevated liver enzymes typically indicate that something is stressing your liver. Common causes include fatty liver, excessive alcohol intake, certain medications, or viral infections like hepatitis. Since your doctor mentioned fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, it’s often linked to lifestyle factors like diet and exercise. It’s generally characterized by an accumulation of fat in liver cells, which can lead to liver inflammation and, in severe cases, damage. Fatty liver is more common in individuals who have obesity, diabetes, or high cholesterol. It’s important to follow up with your doctor for a thorough evaluation, which may involve an ultrasound or more detailed blood tests to assess the degree and cause of the liver changes.

In terms of lifestyle changes, reducing alcohol intake is a critical step. You should aim for a balanced diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while reducing saturated fats and sugars. Cutting down on carbs, especially refined ones, can also help manage fatty liver. Regular physical activity is key – aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week can significantly impact liver health. Drinking plenty of water is beneficial to your overall health, but won’t directly mend liver issues. While turmeric and other remedies are often touted for liver health, it’s important to approach these with caution and ideally consult with a healthcare professional before using them. Some supplements can interact poorly with medications or have unforeseen effects.

Prioritize follow-up consultations to track the levels of liver enzymes and ensure they begin to normalize. Should any symptoms worsen or if you experience symptoms like jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), significant abdominal pain, or persistent nausea, seek medical advice promptly. Your health care provider will provide tailored advice that’s safest and most effective for your situation.
