how to get rid of loose motion - #16046

Pooja

I am really struggling with this issue and could use some help. Last week, I started feeling a bit off after eating some street food — probably not the best idea, huh? I thought it was just a little stomach upset, but then the next day, I had loose motion like crazy. It’s been 4 days, and I can’t seem to get rid of loose motion! I tried drinking electrolytes and eating bland foods like rice and bananas, but nothing seems to work. I’ve had to cancel plans and stay close to a bathroom, which is so embarrassing! My stomach also feels crampy sometimes, and I’m a bit lightheaded. I went to the doc, but they just said it should clear up soon and recommended over-the-counter meds. But like, how to get rid of loose motion quickly? I need to be back to normal! Should I be worried if it keeps going like this? This loose motion is seriously impacting my daily life, and I’m not sure what else I can do. Any tips on remedies or things I might be missing? Thanks a bunch!

Doctors’ responses

Managing loose motions, or diarrhea, can be frustrating, but a few strategies can help get things under control more effectively. First and foremost, since it’s been several days and you’re experiencing lightheadedness, it’s really important to stay hydrated. Continue with electrolytes but also make sure to sip on water regularly. Dehydration is a common and serious risk with persistent diarrhea. Keep an eye on the color of your urine – it should be light-colored, not dark. You mentioned eating bland foods already, which is good. Continue with BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) and avoid dairy, fatty, or spicy foods as these can worsen symptoms. Over-the-counter medications like loperamide can help reduce the frequency of bowel movements, but if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s a good idea to reach out to a healthcare provider again. If you develop a high fever, notice blood in your stools, or have severe abdominal pain, don’t delay in seeking medical attention as these could be signs of a more serious condition. Also, dealing with cramps, gentle teas like ginger or peppermint might offer some relief but steer clear of caffeine. Beyond that, avoid alcohol and fizzy drinks during this period. Finally, as tempting as it might be, resist taking antibiotics unless specifically prescribed since inappropriate use can exacerbate the problem. If there’s no improvement after a few more days, or other symptoms arise, further evaluation might be necessary to rule out issues like infections or other gastrointestinal concerns.
