medicine to stop loose motion immediately - #16931

Dhruv

I am having this really rough time with my stomach. It started out of nowhere yesterday after lunch, which was kinda odd since I thought I was eating healthy. I mean, it was just a salad! Anyway, I began to feel this rumbling and then boom, loose motion hit me like a freight train. I've been running to the bathroom every 20 min for the last 12 hours and it's exhausting. I've tried drinking some water but I can hardly keep that down too! Being stuck at home is one thing, but I have to work from home and I feel so gross and unproductive. I just need a medicine to stop loose motion immediately. I tried calling my doctor, but couldn’t get through. It's like, can anyone recommend any over-the-counter medicine to stop loose motion immediately?? Should I be worried about dehydration? I’m also not sure if I should be eating anything at all right now or just stick to the BRAT diet. I don’t even know what’s causing this! I know you can get loose motion from certain foods but I’ve had similar meals before and never had this happen. Anyone else had this craziness? Realize I need to sort this out fast. Please help!

Doctors’ responses

If you’re looking for over-the-counter solutions to stop loose motion, loperamide is often used to slow down gut movement, essentially providing relief by reducing the frequency of bowel movements. However, it’s essential to understand that using it too hastily without figuring out the cause could mask ongoing issues, so using it should be approached cautiously — especially if you have high fever or bloody stools. Safety first: If dehydration is a concern, which it very well might be after 12 hours of diarrhea, focusing on rehydration remains vital. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) can help replenish lost electrolytes, while sipping small amounts of clear fluids frequently is a good step to maintain some level of hydration. While feeling rough, avoiding solid foods for a short while can help your gut settle - slowly reintroduce bland, easy-to-digest foods as you feel capable, which naturally connects to contemplating the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) once things stabilize a bit. Slow building consumption of these can support recovery. Keep a close eye on symptoms; if there’s no improvement or if you see blood, significant weight loss, persistent vomiting, or severe dehydration, seeking immediate medical attention is necessary. On another important note, understanding what triggered this response remains critical since healthy foods can also become problematic due to improper washing or cross-contamination with pathogens. To prevent repeats, ensure thorough washing and preparation of raw veggies. If you continue a similar diet without previous issues manifesting, it’s worth considering if there could have been a different causative agent this time. Given prolonged or severe symptoms, pursuing professional medical consultation when viable is advised.
