why does loose motion happen - #17034

Karthik

I am really stressed about this issue I've been having. For the last few weeks, I've been dealing with loose motion, and I have no idea why this is happening. It started suddenly after I ate some street food, and honestly, it’s been a rollercoaster ever since. One day I’m fine, the next I can't leave the bathroom! I’ve tried drinking more water and eating bland foods but still, why does loose motion happen? I find myself googling stuff all the time, but I get so overwhelmed with all the info out there. I had some blood tests and everything came back normal, so I’m just confused. Could it be a food allergy? Or maybe stress is messing with my stomach? Sometimes I think I’m imagining things because one moment I feel okay, and then bam, loose motion hits again. My friends say it could be a stomach bug or maybe something I ate, but I can’t pin down the cause. Does anyone know why does loose motion happen so often? Should I be worried or is this normal? Any insights would be super helpful because I just want to feel normal again and stop having to run to the restroom all the time!

Doctors’ responses

Loose motions, medically known as diarrhea, can indeed be disruptive and bothersome, especially when they persist. In your case, it’s understandable to feel stressed, given the persistence following that episode of eating street food. Loose motions can occur due to a variety of reasons: infections (viral or bacterial), food intolerance or allergies, stress, or sometimes even underlying chronic gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Given the sudden onset after consuming street food, it is possible that you might have experienced a mild gastrointestinal infection or even consumed contaminated food. These infections often resolve on their own, but can sometimes linger, causing intermittent symptoms like those you describe.

Stress can certainly affect the gastrointestinal system and exacerbate symptoms of diarrhea, as the gut and brain are closely connected. If stress is a significant factor in your life right now, it might be worth exploring stress reduction techniques like mindfulness, yoga, or other relaxation exercises. With regard to food allergies or intolerances, it could be helpful to maintain a food diary to track what you eat and correlate it with symptoms. This might help identify any patterns or specific food triggers.

Since your blood tests came back normal, it’s less likely to be a serious underlying condition, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution. If your symptoms persist for more than a few weeks, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. You could discuss potential tests like stool cultures to check for any lingering infections. Additionally, if you notice any alarming symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, dehydration, blood in stools, or significant weight loss, seek medical attention promptly.

In the meantime, continue drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and consider a probiotic supplement, which can help restore normal gut flora. Gradually reintroduce more varied foods as your symptoms stabilize. Avoiding spicy, fried foods or those known to irritate your gut in these situations can also be helpful. Staying informed and working closely with your healthcare provider will aid in resolving the issue effectively. Remember, if your condition doesn’t improve or worsens, it’s always a sound idea to seek professional guidance.
