shoulder pain from sleeping - #17433

Reet

I am really tired of this shoulder pain from sleeping. Last week, I woke up and felt this sharp ache in my right shoulder that just wouldn’t go away. Like, I tried stretching and even used a heating pad, but the shoulder pain from sleeping just kept coming back every night! I honestly can’t figure out why it’s happening. I remember, I was sleeping in a different position, maybe that’s it? But I thought I often slept like that. Some nights I lay on my back, other times it’s my side. Ugh! I even looked up some exercises and tried to fix my posture, but the shoulder pain from sleeping is still bugging me. It’s crazy how much this affects my day-to-day. I’m starting to wonder if I need a new mattress or pillow? My friends say it could be related to stress, but I don’t feel overly stressed, just a bit overwhelmed with everything. Is there something I should definitely check with a doc? Could this just be normal aging or something? Why won't this shoulder pain from sleeping just go away? Would love any thoughts or tips!

Doctors' responses

It’s possible that your shoulder pain after sleeping is related to your sleep positioning or the quality of your mattress and pillows. First, let’s consider the positioning. Sleeping on your side may put pressure on the shoulder and can lead to discomfort if prolonged. Consider alternating your sleep position if you usually rest predominantly on one side, and see if you can spend more time sleeping on your back as this often provides better overall support. On your back, make sure to also support your elbows or have a small pillow under both arms for even better alignment. Quality of your mattress and pillow can definitely affect shoulder pain. If your mattress is old, sagging, or too firm or too soft, it might be worth considering upgrading to one that offers support specifically for your shoulders or overall body contouring. Likewise, using a pillow that aligns with the natural curvature of your neck will help maintain shoulder and neck alignment and relieve pressure. Memory foam pillows can often aid in this aspect. Stress, as your friends suggested, might increace muscle tension which could contribute to discomfort. Though you don’t feel greatly stressed, practicing relaxation techniques (like progressive muscle relaxation or mindfulness) before bed might also help. If the shoulder pain persists, it’s wise to consult a healthcare provider to rule out other causes, especially if you notice any swelling, redness, warmth or if the pain significantly restricts movement. Physical therapy could provide relief by offering individualized exercises to strengthen and stretch relevant shoulder muscles. In case you also feel tingling or numbness, or if there’s an onset of severe pain, do seek medical help swiftly as these could indicate more serious concerns.
