fruits good for dengue patient - #17508

Vihaan

I am feeling really lost right now. A few days ago, I was diagnosed with dengue and the doctor told me to rest and stay hydrated. I’ve been doing my best to follow their advice, but it’s tough to know what to eat. I heard some people say that fruits are good for dengue patients, but like, which fruits exactly? I really love fruits, but I've been avoiding some things just because I'm not sure if they’ll help or hurt me right now. I’ve been feeling kinda weak and I do have some fever, also some joint pain. Last night, I ate watermelon and some bananas because I read they're hydrating. But are there specific fruits good for dengue patient? Someone mentioned papaya could be helpful, is that true? What about citrus fruits? Are they okay? I want to boost my immune system and honestly, I need to get back on my feet fast—this is so frustrating! If anyone could share their experience or suggestions on what fruits are really good for dengue patients, I would really appreciate it. I just wanna feel better. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

For someone battling dengue, focusing on supportive nutrition is key to recovery. You’re on the right track with watermelon and bananas. They’re hydrating and easy on the stomach, which is important since dehydration and appetite loss are common in dengue. Papaya is often touted for its potential benefits; people suggest it due to the presence of papain, an enzyme which may support platelet production, though evidence is mixed. Including papaya leaves, or their extracts, is a common traditional approach, but you should only do so under medical supervision, because preparation must be precise. As for citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, they’re safe to consume and provide vitamin C, boosting your immune system, aiding in faster recovery. Guavas are noteworthy too, high in vitamin C and fiber, promoting recovery, but watch your intake as excess fiber can upset the stomach. Avoid fruits with high acid content if they trigger nausea or worsen your appetite. Kiwi is another good option, providing vitamin C and E, both of which support your immune system. Stay mindful of your body’s responses to foods and adjust accordingly. Remember, hydration remains crucial—continue to drink plenty of fluids like coconut water or electrolytes solutions. If symptoms worsen or if you notice any alarming signs like bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting, seek immediate medical care, as complications can arise quickly with dengue.
