side effects of face clean-up - #17942

Aadhya

I am really confused about the side effects of face clean-up because I just got one done at a new spa. Honestly, I thought it would be a relaxing experience, but about a day later, my skin started feeling super sensitive. Like, I got these small red bumps on my cheeks and some itchy patches around my jaw. Not to mention, my forehead got really oily out of nowhere. Is this normal from a clean-up? I didn't even expect any bad reactions... Are the side effects of face clean-up common? I’ve had facials before and never had anything like this. Also, I read online that some people experience breakouts or irritation after a clean-up — is that something I should be worried about? If the side effects of face clean-up are as bad as what I'm experiencing right now, why don't more people talk about it? I wonder if I should just wait it out or maybe apply something? Any tips to ease these side effects of face clean-up would be super helpful! Ugh, I just want my skin to go back to normal. Any advice?

It’s not uncommon to experience irritation or sensitivity after a face clean-up, especially if newer products or techniques were used. The small red bumps, itchy patches, and increased oiliness you’re noticing can all happen due to a variety of factors during the clean-up—like the products, tools, or pressure applied during exfoliation or extraction processes. Sometimes skin takes a little time to adjust after such treatments. While it’s generally a temporary reaction, it’s understandable it doesn’t feel great. Facials and clean-ups can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, causing irritation or even triggering breakouts in some due to increased oil production as your skin attempts to rebalance itself. It’s also possible to react to certain ingredients in the products used, even if they are generally considered safe. For now, avoid further irritation by skipping any harsh cleansers, exfoliants, or new products. Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a lightweight moisturizer to keep your skin soothed. If itching or redness is bothersome, applying a cool compress can sometimes help ease discomfort. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream might be useful for reducing inflammation but use it sparingly and only if you’ve had no issues with it in the past. If symptoms persist beyond a few days or worsen—it might be wise to consult a dermatologist to rule out any allergic reactions or need for specific treatment. Prevention-wise, if undergoing future clean-ups, consider doing a patch test at the spa before proceeding with a full treatment, and communicate any known skin sensitivities to your esthetician. Being cautious about the products used and voicing your concerns can often greatly reduce the risk of adverse effects.
