how to save kidney - #17956

Shreya

I am really worried about my health lately and feel like I need some advice on how to save kidney function before it's too late. A few months ago, I started noticing some weird symptoms like swelling in my ankles and I would get these crazy headaches that wouldn’t go away, like just pounding. Anyway, I went to see my doctor and after a couple tests, he mentioned my creatinine levels were elevated. Now I’m freaking out because I don’t know what to do. I mean, how to save kidney health feels like such a huge thing right now. I try to eat healthy, mostly vegetables and lean proteins, but I was told to cut back on salt and maybe even protein? Just feeling lost. And then there’s the whole hydration thing – I drink water but not as much as I should. One doctor said it’s important for how to save kidney function, while another said moderation is key. It’s all so confusing! Do I need to see a specialist? I feel like I need more clarity on how to save kidney health, because I really don't want to go down a path where it gets worse. Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

When thinking about how to save kidney health, you have already taken some good first steps by eating healthy and trying to stay informed about your habits. First, it’s crucial to address the potential causes behind your symptoms such as the swelling and headaches, especially since your creatinine levels are elevated. This could indicate impaired kidney function, and understanding the underlying reason is key. You mentioned about salt intake; it’s wise to limit salt to prevent fluid retention and high blood pressure, both of which stress the kidneys. Reducing processed foods which are high in sodium can be a beneficial start. Regarding protein, the advice can sometimes vary based on the stage or cause of kidney impairment. Generally, high protein diets can increase the kidneys’ workload especially in cases of reduced function, but balance is important – consult with a nephrologist who can help tailor a dietary plan specific to your needs. Staying hydrated is indeed crucial, but excess water can also strain the kidneys if they are already compromised, so it should be in moderation. Aim for a balance that keeps your urine light yellow and not too diluted. Given your symptoms and test results, seeing a nephrologist can provide specialized insights into your condition and potential progression. They may also suggest additional tests to pinpoint how best to support your kidney health. Monitoring blood pressure and managing other conditions such as diabetes is also pivotal in preventing further kidney damage. Lastly, avoid NSAIDs and other medications that can impact kidney function without consulting your doctor. By taking these steps and seeking specialist care, you’re on the right path to preserving kidney function and gaining control over your health.
