How I can get rid off from Lichen Planus Pigmentosus skin disease? - #18035

sufi

since 6 to 8 years, I have had this Problem as I have dark brown patches on my neck, Back and front, with no itching, redness, or pain. And I have consulted with Dr., I had also gone with a Biopsy test also which has also confirmed that this is LPP. So the doctor gave me medicine 1st two weeks. I have to take MMF 500 mg and Tacrolimus 0.1% ointment. I'm using sunscreen also, and they said they wouldn't give a 100% result. And even when I search about MMF 500 Mg, it is a drug which suppresses my immune system, so I'm a Little bit confused, even I in fear. to take this or not. because I know from research that it might develop some cancer. So I don't know what to do, whether I should stop taking treatment or not.

And i have no issue with this lpp it only dark brownish patchy on my "neck" front as well as back.

I am a general dentist with 3+ years of working in real-world setups, and lemme say—every single patient teaches me something diff. It’s not just teeth honestly, it’s people… and how they feel walking into the chair. I try really hard to not make it just a “procedure thing.” I explain stuff in plain words—no confusing dental jargon, just straight talk—coz I feel like when ppl *get* what's going on, they feel safer n that makes all the difference. Worked with all ages—like, little kids who need that gentle nudge about brushing, to older folks who come in with long histories and sometimes just need someone to really sit n listen. It’s weirdly rewarding to see someone walk out lighter, not just 'coz their toothache's gone but coz they felt seen during the whole thing. A lot of ppl come in scared or just unsure, and I honestly take that seriously. I keep the vibe calm. Try to read their mood, don’t rush. I always tell myself—every smile’s got a story, even the broken ones. My thing is: comfort first, then precision. I want the outcome to last, not just look good for a week. Not tryna claim perfection or magic solutions—just consistent, clear, hands-on care where patients feel heard. I think dentistry should *fit* the person, not push them into a box. That's kinda been my philosophy from day one. And yeah, maybe sometimes I overexplain or spend a bit too long checking alignment again but hey, if it means someone eats pain-free or finally smiles wide in pics again? Worth it. Every time.

Hello,

LPP is a chronic immune-related skin condition causing dark brown patches, usually without itching or pain.

It is not cancer and not dangerous, but it is long-lasting.

MMF (Mycophenolate Mofetil) is given to control immune activity when LPP is old or spreading.

Cancer risk from MMF is linked to high doses for many years (transplant patients).

👍 Low dose, short-term use for skin disease has very low risk.

Do not stop MMF suddenly without your dermatologist’s advice.

Tacrolimus ointment + sunscreen are safe and important to prevent worsening.

100% cure is not possible; treatment aims to stop new patches and slowly lighten existing ones.

Improvement takes months, not weeks.

🛑 Your treatment is standard and generally safe. Continue under medical supervision and discuss duration and monitoring with your dermatologist.

I trust this helps Thank you

Hello Ma’am Good afternoon! Thank you so much, it really helps me. However only thing I want to clear is that if I take the MMF 500 mg tablet during my Periods so does it causes any severe impact? Like irregular periods, something like that.

I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Lichen Planus Pigmentosus (LPP) can indeed be a challenging skin condition to manage, and it’s understandable to have some concerns about the prescribed treatment plan, particularly when it involves medications like Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF). MMF is an immunosuppressant, often used when more conventional treatments have not been sufficient. While it’s true that immunosuppressants can have serious side effects, including a potentially increased risk of certain types of cancers, the actual risk depends on many factors, such as dosage, duration of treatment, and individual patient characteristics. It’s important to weigh these risks against the potential benefits, and the decision should be based on a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider about your specific situation and medical history. Many patients are monitored with regular follow-ups and possibly lab tests to catch any adverse effects early on. Additionally, make sure your routine includes using proper sun protection, as protecting the affected skin from UV radiation is crucial. Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, avoiding peak sun exposure hours, and wearing protective clothing can help prevent exacerbation of pigmentation. It might also be beneficial to consider consulting a dermatologist who specializes in pigmentary disorders for a second opinion, as they could provide additional insights or alternative treatment options. The decision to continue or halt treatment should not be made in isolation but rather jointly with a healthcare professional who understands the nuances of your case. Regular monitoring and follow-up appointments can greatly aid in managing this condition effectively while minimizing potential risks.
