stop diarrhea immediately - #18371

Reet

I am really in a tough spot right now. Last night, I went out for dinner and had some seafood, and today it feels like my stomach has declared war on me. I’m experiencing this awful diarrhea and I just can't seem to get a break. It’s really disruptive, especially since I have a big meeting tomorrow that I can’t miss. I’ve tried some Imodium, but it’s not working like I hoped. I really need to stop diarrhea immediately, or I’m going to be in serious trouble. I’m also worried about dehydration, cause I’m feeling weak and dizzy. I’ve been drinking water. Should I maybe go for something like Gatorade to help with electrolytes? And like, what if this is something more serious? I don’t think I have a stomach bug cause I feel fine otherwise, just the constant running to the bathroom. I just want to stop diarrhea immediately! I’ve heard about some home remedies but I’m not sure what’s safe or effective. If anyone has ideas or tricks that really work, please share. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

While it’s understandable to want immediate relief from diarrhea, it’s vital to address both your symptoms and potential underlying cause—especially since you suspect a possible connection to the seafood. You did well taking Imodium, which can often help reduce diarrhea by slowing down bowel movements, but its impact varies between individuals. Persistent diarrhea, particularly after eating seafood, raises concerns like foodborne illnesses, which sometimes need more careful management. Ensure to drink clear fluids, but given the feelings of weakness and dizziness, it may be more beneficial to consume an oral rehydration solution or even Gatorade to help replenish lost electrolytes, though watch the sugar content as it might exacerbate diarrhea. Steer clear from caffeinated or sugary drinks, as they could worsen dehydration. For immediate dietary adjustments, stick to bland foods that are part of the BRAT diet—bananas, rice, applesauce, toast—which are easier on your gut and can help firm stool. Avoid dairy, fatty foods, and high-fiber items for now, as these can irritate your digestive system. Garlic, cumin, or apple cider vinegar are sometimes touted as home remedies, but their effectiveness and safety aren’t firmly evidenced. More importantly, keep an eye out for warning signs like severe abdominal pain, high fever, or blood in stools—these require prompt medical evaluation as they may indicate something more severe like bacterial infections. Manage stress levels as they can exacerbate symptoms, too. It is prudent to consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist or worsen, ensuring accurate diagnosis and the needed care.
