food to avoid during dengue - #18407

Dhruv

I am kinda worried right now because my friend just got diagnosed with dengue and I'm trying to help him out as much as I can. The doctors said there are specific food to avoid during dengue, but they didn’t go into detail, and now I’m freaking out about what he can and can’t eat. He’s been feeling really weak, with high fever, and stomach issues too, which is why I wanna make sure he doesn’t accidentally eat something that could make it worse. I heard that oily or spicy foods are a no-no, and maybe dairy too? But honestly, it’s confusing. Like, how do you know what exactly to avoid? Does anyone know if there’s a definitive list of food to avoid during dengue? I thought he could just stick to plain rice and boiled veggies, but then someone told me he shouldn’t even have certain fruits. I just wanna be sure I’m helping him the right way!! Seriously, any advice on the entire food to avoid during dengue topic would be super helpful, because I just really don’t wanna miss something that could put his recovery at risk. Ugh.

It’s definitely understandable to be concerned about your friend’s diet during dengue, especially when symptoms like weakness and stomach issues are at play. While there isn’t a definitive list of “banned” foods, there are some general guidelines to follow to ensure he gets the right nutrients without aggravating symptoms. Firstly, avoiding oily and spicy foods is a good call, as these can upset the stomach further and contribute to digestive discomfort, something we want to avoid during dengue recovery. Spicy and greasy foods may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, potentially worsening nausea or vomiting. As for dairy, it’s not that all dairy needs to be eliminated, but if he experiences lactose intolerance symptoms, it might be wise to limit or avoid it until his stomach settles down. Regarding fruits, focus on those that are easy to digest and rich in vitamin C, like oranges or papayas. These can boost the immune system, helping with the healing process. While it’s advisable to steer clear of certain fruits, like those causing flatulence or high sugar content, such as bananas or mangoes, there’s no need to restrict them all. Encouraging plenty of hydration is crucial—water, herbal teas, or oral rehydration solutions are essential to prevent dehydration due to fever or vomiting. Additionally, sticking to light, easily digestible meals like plain rice and boiled veggies is a wise approach, but he can also include proteins like boiled chicken or lentils, which are gentle on the stomach. It’s incredibly vital, though, to be vigilant for any red flag symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, shortness of breath, or signs of bleeding. These require immediate medical attention, as they indicate possible complications of dengue. Lastly, while it’s important to support him through dietary choices, ensure he continues with the medical treatment and follow-ups as prescribed by his healthcare provider.
