how to increase pulse rate immediately - #18570

Keya

I am feeling kinda worried right now because my pulse rate has been super low and I need to know how to increase pulse rate immediately. Just the other day, I was in a spin class, and I started to feel faint. My heart was racing but then it just dropped to like 50 beats per minute! I've tried drinking coffee and even some energy drinks thinking they would help, but nothing really seem to work. I did some googling and found tips on how to increase pulse rate immediately, like deep breathing or even cold water on the face, but I’m not sure what would be the best option in my situation. Does anyone have suggestions on how to increase pulse rate immediately when you feel dizzy? Also, would jumping jacks help, or is that risky since my pulse rate is low? I just really need to fix this because it’s affecting my workouts and my daily life. Feeling a little overwhelmed since it seems like such a simple thing but then when you're in the moment, it’s scary! How to increase pulse rate immediately? What actually works? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

When dealing with a low pulse rate, especially if it’s causing dizziness or faintness, it’s crucial to address the underlying causes. A sudden drop in pulse rate during physical activity, like your spin class, can be a signal of an underlying health issue that needs medical evaluation such as heart block or arrhythmias. It’s important firstly to ensure you’re safe, so stop exercising, sit or lie down, and let your body rest. While there are some immediate actions that can sometimes help, they aren’t substitutes for medical advice. Cold water or deep breathing can sometimes stimulate the vagus nerve and paradoxically might actually slow the heart rate further rather than increase it; these aren’t typically used to raise pulse rates. Jumping jacks or other exercises can risk overexertion if your pulse is already low. Before trying other remedies, I strongly recommend contacting a healthcare provider immediately, especially given you experience faintness alongside the low pulse. Since substances like caffeine and energy drinks haven’t helped, and might contribute to further complications like palpitations, it’s best to avoid them in these circumstances. If you feel faint, lightheaded, or experience chest pain, seek emergency medical evaluation. They can run tests like an EKG or blood work to rule out serious concerns and pinpoint precise causes. Long-term management might involve addressing potential electrolyte imbalances, hydration issues, or adjustments in your exercise routines. Until you’re cleared by a healthcare professional, I suggest avoiding strenuous activities that could exacerbate symptoms.
