big pimple on face - #18829

Reet

I am really freaking out right now because I woke up this morning with a huge, like, a BIG pimple on my face! It literally appeared overnight—I mean one minute I'm fine and the next, bam, it’s there, and it’s not just any pimple, it's the biggest pimple on my face I’ve ever seen! I tried to pop it, which was a terrible idea I know and now it’s red and sore. Should I be worried??? I’ve never had such an inflamed spot before. I'm also pondering if maybe it’s a result of stress from my job lately, or maybe I used a new skincare product that didn’t agree with me? Ugh! I’ve been washing my face daily and using my usual makeup, but this big pimple on my face is throwing everything off. Shouldn’t I have seen signs before it got this bad? Honestly, it’s making me feel super self-conscious. I’ve got a family gathering this weekend and I can’t imagine showing up like this. Is there anything I can do to make this big pimple on my face go away fast? Like, any topical treatments or advice on things to avoid? Just anything that works. Thanks for your help!

Doctors' responses

A big pimple appearing seemingly overnight can indeed be alarming, but it is not uncommon for such blemishes to develop that quickly, especially with a mix of factors like stress or new skincare products. When a pimple becomes inflamed and sore, it’s often a sign your skin is reacting defensively. Since you already attempted to pop it, which can sometimes lead to more irritation or even infection, it’s essential to avoid further touching or squeezing it. First, you can use a warm compress gently pressed against the pimple for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day. This helps open pores and reduces inflammation. Over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help decrease inflammation and kill bacteria responsible for acne. Apply these treatments following the package instructions, generally once or twice a day. Make sure you do a patch test if it’s your first time using a product with these active ingredients to see how your skin reacts. Also, keep using your usual cleanser, but opt for non-comedogenic products that don’t clog pores in case the new skincare is a factor; sometimes changes in routines can lead to sudden blemishes. Now, to avoid making it worse, steer clear from heavy makeup on the affected area or touching it more. Stress can contribute to acne, so managing stress through relaxation techniques or exercises could indirectly help too. If the redness and soreness don’t improve within a few days or you notice any spreading infection symptoms like increased warmth, redness, or pus, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional to consider further treatment options like topical antibiotics. Also, protect your skin from the sun using a non-comedogenic sunscreen to prevent dark spots from developing in the healing process. While quick fixes are rare with acne, these steps should help in reducing the size and visibility of the pimple before your family gathering. Stay patient, and with gentle care, it should improve soon.
