can you live with one kidney - #18981

Ishaan

I am a bit freaked out right now because I just found out that I might be losing a kidney. Long story short, I went in for some routine tests because I've been feeling a bit off, and they discovered a kidney stone in the one I have. When they started explaining everything, the doctor mentioned that if it doesn’t clear up, or if it gets worse, I might need surgery. This got me thinking a lot about whether or not people can live with just one kidney. I mean, can you live with one kidney? Like, what’s the reality of that? I have a friend who said her cousin had to live with one kidney after an accident and is perfectly fine, but I can't help but think about all the risks. Are there special diets, restrictions, or things I should worry about if it comes to that? Can you live with one kidney and enjoy a normal life? I don't want to end up compromising my health in the long run just because of a stone!! Anyone have experiences or advice?

Yes, you can definitely live with one kidney. Many people worldwide live healthy, normal lives with just one. When born, humans typically have two kidneys, which filter waste from the blood and help control blood pressure and maintain electrolyte balance. However, one healthy kidney can take on the workload of two, a remarkable feature of our bodies. If you end up needing surgery and have a kidney removed, or if there’s permanent damage to one, it’s crucial to monitor the remaining kidney’s function regularly through check-ups and blood tests. In terms of lifestyle, individuals with a single kidney are generally recommended to maintain a healthy diet—one rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins—while limiting salt, alcohol and processed foods to keep your kidney function optimized. Staying well-hydrated is important as well. Regular physical activity is also beneficial but, typically, high-contact sports may be limited to protect the remaining kidney. Your healthcare provider could offer further personalized recommendations based on your specific health profile. If you ever notice changes like swelling or fatigue, it’s wise to consult your doctor promptly, as these may be signs to watch out for. Regular follow-ups with a healthcare professional keep things on track. While worrying over kidney stones is natural, addressing them timely and discussing plans with your doctor helps you in managing your condition effectively. Always seek professional advice tailored to your health situation, as this optimizes your overall well-being while managing kidney health effectively.
