chronic hepatic parenchymal disease - #19408

Vedant

I am really stuck here trying to understand what I’m dealing with. For about six months now, I've had this strange fatigue and some pain in my upper right abdomen. At first, I thought it was just stress, but then my doctor ordered a bunch of tests and mentioned I might have chronic hepatic parenchymal disease. I had no idea what that even was, but after googling, I got more worried. The bloodwork showed elevated liver enzymes, and they say my liver function tests came back abnormal. The doctor was talking about possible long-term damage and screening for other liver issues, but I feel so overwhelmed! I am just trying to figure out if chronic hepatic parenchymal disease means my liver is seriously messed up? Could diet or lifestyle changes help at all? Or is it just a wait-and-see? I could really use some advice on what sort of questions I should be asking my doctor or what to expect next. I’m feeling stressed about all this and want to catch things early if possible. Does anyone have experience with chronic hepatic parenchymal disease? Any tips on managing symptoms or just understanding this better would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Chronic hepatic parenchymal disease essentially refers to long-term damage or disease affecting the liver’s functional tissue. It’s not a specific diagnosis but indicates something is affecting the liver tissue, such as inflammation due to conditions like chronic hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or fibrosis. Elevated liver enzymes in your bloodwork can be a sign of liver cell damage or inflammation, so your doctor is right to follow up on it. Since you have fatigue and pain in the upper right abdomen, further evaluations, possibly including imaging studies like ultrasound or even a liver biopsy, might be considered to get more clarity on what’s happening with your liver.

Lifestyle changes can certainly play a vital role in managing liver health, and they often are part of the treatment plan for many liver conditions. Here are a few strategies you can consider discussing with your doctor: a balanced diet low in saturated fats and refined sugars can help lessen strain on your liver, especially if fatty liver disease is in play. If alcohol consumption is part of your routine, minimizing or eliminating it is crucial as alcohol can exacerbate liver damage. Regular exercise can also help improve liver health, particularly if weight loss is needed. It’s essential to get immunized against hepatitis A and B if you haven’t already, as these viral infections could further affect liver function.

You should ask your doctor about specific causes for your situation, the stage of liver disease, potential need for medications or further diagnostic tests, such as a fibroscan for fibrosis assessment, and the anticipated natural course of the condition. Inquire about signs or symptoms that should prompt urgent care, and how frequently you should get your liver function monitored. While chronic liver conditions can be serious, early detection and appropriate management strategies can significantly alter the disease course and improve quality of life. Make sure to work closely with your healthcare team to monitor and address these changes proactively.
