causes for weight loss - #19818

Vedant

I am super worried because I’ve been losing weight without trying and I really don’t get it. Over the past couple of months, I went from 165 to like 145 pounds, and that just feels really strange. I thought maybe it was just stress from work, but then I’ve been feeling tired all the time, like no matter how much sleep I get, I wake up feeling like a zombie. I also noticed my appetite kinda disappeared 😟. I used to eat pretty big meals, but now I’m just snacking here and there. Talking to friends, they mentioned possible causes for weight loss, like underlying medical issues or even mental health stuff, and I’m freaking out a bit. I’ve read stuff online about causes for weight loss like hyperthyroidism or diabetes, but I don’t know what to think. I finally made a doc appointment, but it’s still a week away and I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this or has any ideas about potential causes for weight loss. It’s honestly kinda scaring me, and I just want to feel normal again. Anyone have any advice or similar experiences? Any common causes for weight loss you'd recommend I look into while I wait? Thanks!

Unintentional weight loss can be concerning and is definitely worth investigating. There are indeed several potential causes. Common medical issues that could lead to unintentional weight loss include hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces an excess of hormones, speeding up the metabolism and leading to weight loss despite normal or increased food consumption. Other possible causes include type 1 diabetes, malabsorption syndromes (like celiac disease), inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s disease), or even infections like tuberculosis. Mental health conditions like depression or anxiety may also contribute, as they can impact appetite and energy levels. Since you’ve mentioned tiredness and a decreased appetite, it’s important to see if there could be an underlying issue such as nutritional deficiencies or even chronic fatigue syndrome. Additionally, ordinary stress and lifestyle changes might also play roles, although, given the magnitude of weight change, more substantial medical causes should be evaluated. While you wait for your appointment, it could be helpful to keep a detailed record of your diet, activity levels, and any other symptoms you experience - like changes in mood, sleep patterns, or other physical symptoms. This information could really aid your healthcare provider in determining the root cause more efficiently. Meanwhile, ensure you’re hydrating well and eating small, nutritious meals as you are able. If you find any of your symptoms worsen drastically, it’s best to seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
